All eight Democratic candidates for governor said they do not support the deal that Gov. Scott Walker negotiated to entice Foxconn to Wisconsin.<\/p>\n

The candidates also talked about raising the minimum wage and reducing the prison population during the campaign\u2019s first televised debate last week, held in the Mainstage Theatre at UW-Milwaukee. The debate was moderated by WTMJ news anchors Charles Benson and Shannon Sims, along with W51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Mitch Teich.<\/p>\n

Former state Democratic Party chairman Matt Flynn called the Foxconn agreement a \u201csneaky, crooked deal\u201d that he will shut down when he is governor. Mahlon Mitchell, Kelda Roys, Kathleen Vinehout, Paul Soglin and Mike McCabe also want to derail the deal.<\/p>\n

State schools superintendent Tony Evers agreed with Josh Pade that it\u2019s too late to stop the deal but said it should be renegotiated to better benefit Wisconsin employees and environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t sit up here and tell the people of Wisconsin…this isn\u2019t going to happen,\u201d Evers said. \u201cWe have to make sure we are already there and that the people of Wisconsin are treated fairly and we don\u2019t make the same mistake again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taiwan-based technology giant Foxconn Technology Group agreed to build a huge plant in Wisconsin to manufacture flat-screen displays, lured by a package of state and local incentives that could approach $4 billion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d like to know what (Walker) was smoking when he made that deal,\u201d said Madison Mayor Paul Soglin. \u201cIn China, they are laughing at us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The candidates will square off in the primary election Aug. 14. The winner will take on Walker in the Nov. 6 general election.<\/p>\n

Vinehout, state senator from Alma, stressed the state\u2019s history of being one of the first in the nation to implement a living wage in 1913<\/a>. She advocates increasing the current minimum wage of $7.25 to $8 an hour, then raising it every year until it hits $15.<\/p>\n

Soglin is supportive of a law in Dane County, which includes Madison, that will raise the minimum wage<\/a>for county workers to $15 by 2022. He disagrees with those who say that\u2019s too high.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will gain back the losses in four to five years,\u201d Soglin said.<\/p>\n

All the candidates agreed that the state\u2019s prison population should be lowered.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re spending an ocean of money. It is bankrupting us morally and financially,\u201d said Roys, former state representative from Madison.<\/p>\n

Roys wants to focus more on programs that would better integrate recently released prisoners into society.<\/p>\n

Mitchell, president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin, said that being an African-American male as well as a parent makes this issue personal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we are talking about criminal justice reform, it doesn\u2019t escape me that I am raising two black kids in the worst state to do so. When you think about that, that\u2019s a problem,\u201d Mitchell said.<\/p>\n

McCabe, founder of the nonpartisan group Blue Jean Nation<\/a>, said the state spends as much on the UW System as on state prisons.<\/p>\n

\u201cWisconsin is literally spending more locking people up than spent on locking in the potential of our population,\u201d McCabe said.<\/p>\n

Candidates were also asked to ask questions of each other. Topics were varied from how to appeal to rural voters to Mitchell, referencing his statewideBadger Beer Tour<\/a>, asking McCabe what his favorite beer is.<\/p>\n
