{"id":60092,"date":"2018-06-26T15:13:10","date_gmt":"2018-06-26T20:13:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=60092"},"modified":"2024-09-27T09:17:20","modified_gmt":"2024-09-27T14:17:20","slug":"uwm-center-for-nursing-history-lends-artifacts-to-kohler-art-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwm-center-for-nursing-history-lends-artifacts-to-kohler-art-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"51ÁÔÆæ Center for Nursing History lends artifacts to Kohler art museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several World War I artifacts from <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/nursing\/about\/centers-institutes\/nursing-history\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">51ÁÔÆæ Center for Nursing History<\/a>\u00a0are part of a new exhibit at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jmkac.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Michael Kohler Arts Center<\/a>\u00a0in Sheboygan.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jmkac.org\/exhibition\/2018\/apartment4\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cApartment 4,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0is an immersive narrative art installation by German artist Iris Haussler. Haussler is an internationally renowned artist who has had art installations in Austria, Germany, Italy and Canada. The Kohler exhibit opened June 23.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60093\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60093\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-60093\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2018\/06\/nursing1_20180620_IMC_EH_0013-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Laurie Glass leans against a display case in the nursing museum.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60093\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Laurie K. Glass has been the director of 51ÁÔÆæ Center for Nursing History since it began in 1980 at Cunningham Hall. (51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Elora Hennessey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cApartment 4\u201d is about a fictional World War I nurse named Florence Hasard, who moves to Milwaukee in the 1940s to heal from her war-related trauma and become an artist. Visitors will walk through the exhibit, seeing what Hasard\u2019s apartment would have looked like while she lived in Milwaukee. \u201cApartment 4\u201d follows up on an exhibit, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jmkac.org\/exhibition\/2018\/unseen-forces\/haussler.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Tale of Two<\/a>,\u201d at the Kohler center that introduced the Hasard character. That exhibit opened in February and runs through Aug. 19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNursing was a huge part of World War I, World War II, Vietnam,\u201d said Laurie K. Glass, director of the 51ÁÔÆæ nursing museum.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chipstone.org\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chipstone Foundation<\/a>, which preserves and promotes American material cultural artifacts from the 17th to 20th centurys, collaborated with the John Michael Kohler Arts Center to help make the exhibit historically accurate. The foundation found relevant artifacts at the 51ÁÔÆæ Center for Nursing History, including a nursing cap, nursing cape, Red Cross armband, pocket syringe case and nursing-related books.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60094\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60094\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-60094\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2018\/06\/nursing2_20180620_IMC_EH_0016-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"A display case includes photos, nurse clothing and other items. \" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60094\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A display case at the 51ÁÔÆæ Center for Nursing History shows items that Ada Garvey would have used. (51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Elora Hennessey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The collection at the 51ÁÔÆæ Center for Nursing History is extensive, including uniforms, scrapbooks, tools of nursing and photographs from five now-closed Milwaukee hospital schools of nursing. UW-Madison School of Nursing donated its historical artifact collection to the center in 2016, doubling the size of the 51ÁÔÆæ collection.<\/p>\n<p>The 51ÁÔÆæ museum\u2019s \u00a0collection includes more than seven racks of nursing uniforms from 1895 through the Vietnam War era.<\/p>\n<p>The Center for Nursing History frequently assists researchers, as well as provide teaching opportunities for 51ÁÔÆæ students, faculty and staff, and the surrounding community. This is the first time that the center has lent artifacts to an art museum but has frequently donated or lent materials to other history museums or
