{"id":59629,"date":"2018-06-07T15:18:42","date_gmt":"2018-06-07T20:18:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=59629"},"modified":"2018-06-07T15:18:42","modified_gmt":"2018-06-07T20:18:42","slug":"catalyst-grants-generate-19-million-in-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/catalyst-grants-generate-19-million-in-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Catalyst grants generate $19 million in funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>University of Wisconsin System regents got an overview Thursday of the work that UW-Milwaukee is doing to help power the region\u2019s economic engine.<\/p>\n<p>Brian Thompson, president of the 51ÁÔÆæ Research Foundation and director of the Lubar Entrepreneurship Center, and Jessica Silvaggi, the foundation\u2019s senior licensing manager, highlighted university research and innovation for the regents\u2019 Research, Economic Development and Innovation Committee. Regents are meeting at 51ÁÔÆæ Thursday and Friday.<\/p>\n<p>One key underpinning of the foundation\u2019s efforts are catalyst grants, funded by local foundations and corporations to support promising faculty work. The $4.96 million invested in these grants has already generated $19 million in follow-on funding \u2013 work funded at 51ÁÔÆæ and also investments in startup companies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to note that this is all private support,\u201d Silvaggi said.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation, working in various partnerships, has 126 patents issued or pending, and 73 license or option agreements completed to date.<\/p>\n<p>A few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>51ÁÔÆæ Research Foundation licensee Aqua Metals is partnering with 51ÁÔÆæ Associate Professor Alan Schwabacher to develop heavy metal sensors for industrial wastewater.<\/li>\n<li>T3 BioScience, led by Ching-Hong Yang, professor of biological sciences at 51ÁÔÆæ, is developing compounds to protect high-value fruit crops.<\/li>\n<li>Pantherics is developing a pill that could replace asthma inhalers. Alexander Arnold, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, and Doug Stafford, director of 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Milwaukee Institute for Drug Discovery, are partnering with Columbia University.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_59631\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59631\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-59631\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2018\/06\/LEC300x200-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"A building is under construction.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-59631\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Work continues on the new home for the Lubar Entrepreneurship Center. (51ÁÔÆæ Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thompson and Ilya Avdeev, associate professor of mechanical engineering, talked about the new Lubar Center for Entrepreneurship, which will house a number of programs to help students develop skills in innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship.\u00a0The Student Startup Challenge, Ideas Challenge Courses, and Pop-Up Classes as well as a social innovation, community partnerships, I-Corps and University Innovation Fellows will all be part of the center.<\/p>\n<p>Committee members got a taste of 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s student entrepreneurship with samples of dehydrated melon snacks from the Light Fruit Company included in regents\u2019 gift bags. Senior geosciences major James Van Eerden and marketing major Matt Kemper are partners in the enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>Committee members also heard from a panel talking about how internships help UW System build a diverse and inclusive workforce.<\/p>\n<p>Panelists included Griselda Aldrete, president and CEO, Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee; John Daniels, chairman emeritus of Quarles &amp; Brady LLP and founder of the MKE Fellows program; Michael Diego Vazquez, a 51ÁÔÆæ student who has an internship with the Milwaukee County Courts and Payton Wade, a UW-Madison business major and intern with the Milwaukee Bucks community relationships program.<\/p>\n<p>Daniels and Aldrete spoke about how their programs worked to encourage more minority students to take part in internships and Vazquez and Wade shared their experiences as interns.\u00a0 Regent Eve Hall, chair of the committee, asked the students how the internship had helped them.\u00a0 Wade said her work with the Bucks has helped her improve her communications and increased her confidence. \u201cIt\u2019s helped me grow academically as well as socially,\u201d Vazquez added.<\/p>\n<p>Hall noted that the UW System is interested in supporting inclusive internship programs, noting that the universities need to provide not only academic support, other assistance such as the internships and entrepreneurship opportunities \u201cso students can be the best they can be.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>University of Wisconsin System regents got an overview Thursday of the work that UW-Milwaukee is doing to help power the region\u2019s economic engine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":835,"featured_media":59631,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","uwm_wg_additional_authors":[]},"categories":[174,200],"tags":[250],"section":[],"display_categories":[],"related-coverage":[],"uwmnews-feed":[167,149,158,161,162],"class_list":["post-59629","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-news-in-brief","tag-student-success","uwmnews-feed-alumni-association","uwmnews-feed-engineering-applied-science","uwmnews-feed-letters-science","uwmnews-feed-hard-science","uwmnews-feed-business"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.3 (Yoast SEO v27.3) -
