And yet, the engineering workforce is made up almost entirely of white men.<\/p>\n<p>There is growing research evidence that diversity on teams is linked to higher levels of innovation. But those studies also indicate that member diversity by itself is no guarantee. So what is the \u2018secret sauce\u2019?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_59395\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59395\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-59395 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2018\/05\/Levitas_Singh_Fouad_300x200px-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-59395\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Romila Singh, Ed Levitas and Nadya Fouad<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Three researchers at 51ÁÔÆæ have a nearly half-million-dollar grant from the National Science Foundation to dive deeper into exactly how member diversity fosters innovation within engineering teams.<\/p>\n<p>Identifying the conditions that are needed to ramp up innovation in gender and racially diverse teams is a missing piece, said Nadya Fouad, the Mary and Ted Kellner Endowed Chair of Educational Psychology\u00a0and a distinguished professor at 51ÁÔÆæ.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing part of a team that has good leadership, is open to the perspective of others and where you feel safe, that\u2019s the kind of micro-environment than can transcend the fault lines of gender, race and expertise,\u201d said Fouad.<\/p>\n<p>Fouad and two partners from 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Lubar School of Business, Ed Levitas, professor, and Romila Singh, associate professor, will examine how and why a team\u2019s microclimate \u2013 including psychological safety and collective team identity \u2013 and team dynamics affect both incremental and radical ideas.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers ultimately hope to promote these organizational practices within engineering firms andplan to develop a website of best practices for fostering innovation through
