In previous years, the journal received around 150 works of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction and art annually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve wanted to get bigger and have a more national presence for a while, but we weren\u2019t expecting it to happen so quickly,\u201d said Valerie Laken, the faculty advisor for Furrow and an associate professor of English.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_58887\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58887\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-58887\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2018\/05\/literary300x200-IMG_0077-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Three students and a teacher sit at a table while talking.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-58887\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nonfiction editors Eddie Ahrenhoerster (from left) and Jessie Choinoski meet with Valerie Laken, associate professor of English, and Scott Clark, editor-in-chief of Furrow, to discuss submissions to the journal. (Paul Crowley photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From the mountain of submissions, the journal\u2019s 14 student editors have put together a 156-page magazine showcasing the work of 44 writers. Furrow will host a release party on Wednesday, May 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Art Bar at 722 E. Burleigh St., Milwaukee. The magazine will be available for purchase, and there will be brief readings by several contributors.<\/p>\n<p>Started as a student organization in 1999, Furrow is now produced each spring through 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s English 418: Literary Journal Production class, which undergraduates can take for three credits.<\/p>\n<p>Laken credits this year\u2019s increase in submissions in part to the work of students who researched and developed a contact list for creative writing and art faculty at major universities around United States. The journal\u2019s editors were able to send out two mass calls for submissions to over 600 instructors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to be very critical in deciding if a story was promising and in deciding which pieces would make the final cut,\u201d said Jessie Choinoski, a nonfiction editor and publicist at Furrow and a senior, majoring in English. \u201cI had to become a more critical reader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laken hopes that Furrow gives student writers experience submitting their work for publication and working with editors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope our contributors get that vital encouragement that somebody out there believes in their work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_58888\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58888\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-58888\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2018\/05\/furrow4-18-18-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of the print version of the journal Furrow.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-58888\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Furrow will host a release party on Wednesday, May 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Art Bar at 722 E. Burleigh St., Milwaukee.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to producing a magazine, Furrow\u2019s editors get experience with software such as WordPress, MailChimp, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. They also develop skills with professional communication and collaboration by contacting contributors with edits and working in collaborative teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a little like running a small business, but everyone is always learning how to do their jobs,\u201d Laken said. \u201cThe students learn that crucial skill that young professionals need: how to teach yourself how to do things. When you\u2019re in your first job, you\u2019ll have to figure out how to do things on the fly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of the semester, students work in positions where they read and edit submissions, <a href=\"http:\/\/furrowmag.org\/category\/blog\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write for the journal\u2019s blog<\/a>, edit Furrow\u2019s website, design the print magazine\u2019s layout, copy edit content and do publicity, fundraising and event-planning work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a professional experience in an educational setting,\u201d Choinoski said. \u201cIt\u2019s like your first professional job, but with a little more leniency to make mistakes and learn from them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malachi Lyonsdove, a senior majoring in English, who\u2019s the development officer and fundraising strategist at Furrow, said that he was \u201cgetting skills that I wouldn\u2019t learn in any other English classes. This is so different because there\u2019s a finished product at the end of the semester.
