Locust St.<\/p>\n<p>Blaeser\u2019s poetry reading and introduction to \u201cThe Round House\u201d is the first of several community conversations taking place in March and April in Milwaukee and Waukesha. Milwaukee events will feature several 51ÁÔÆæ faculty and students and will include readings, book discussions and workshops at the Indian Community School.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_56607\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56607\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-56607\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2018\/02\/blaeser250x300-20150106_TCF_ucmr_T5D9530-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-56607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kimberly Blaeser<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Blaeser is a writer, photographer, scholar, author of three poetry collections and the editor of \u201cTraces in Blood, Bone, and Stone: Contemporary Ojibwe Poetry.\u201d In addition, she served as Wisconsin\u2019s poet laureate for 2015-16.\u00a0 Of Anishinaabe ancestry and an enrolled member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe who grew up on the White Earth Reservation, Blaeser is an editorial board member for the \u201cAmerican Indian Lives\u201d series of the University of Nebraska Press and for the \u201cNative American Series\u201d of Michigan State University Press.<\/p>\n<p>The Big Read is a collaboration of University of Wisconsin Colleges and Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community Colleges\u2019 students, faculty and staff to bring communities around the state together to discuss Anishinaabe author Louise Erdrich\u2019s novel \u201cThe Round House.\u201d The novel centers on a Native American family and community as they try to come to terms with the brutal attack and sexual assault of one of their members. The book also investigates the convoluted laws and jurisdictions that have historically made it difficult for legal authorities to prosecute crimes that occur on Indian reservations.<\/p>\n<p>More than 70 Big Read events are taking place across the state in the cities and surrounding areas of Milwaukee.\u00a0 Among other events, 51ÁÔÆæ creative writing graduate students will lead a poetry-writing workshop for students at the Indian Community School of Milwaukee.
