Video artist and 51ÁÔÆæ graduate Sky Hopinka has been named a Mary L. Nohl fellowship winner.<\/p>\n

Originally from Washington, Hopinka moved to Milwaukee and graduated from 51ÁÔÆæ with a MFA in film, video, animation and new genres. He was named one of three fellowship winners in the emerging artist category for 2017. Emerging artist winners receive $10,000 to create new work or complete current projects.<\/p>\n

Hopinka\u2019s work has been included in several film festivals and exhibitions, including the Sundance Film Festival, the LA Film Festival, the 2017 Whitney Biennial Art Exhibition in New York City and the 2016 Wisconsin Triennial Art Exhibition at the Madison Musem of Contemporary Art.<\/p>\n

The Nohl fellowship is funded by a $9.6 million bequest to support area artists from late artist and former Fox Point resident Mary L. Nohl. Winners are selected by an independent panel of three visual artists from outside the four-county area of Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington and Waukesha counties.<\/p>\n

The winners this year<\/a> were chosen from a field of 142 applicants.<\/p>\n

Last year, three Peck School artists received Nohl fellowships<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jesse McLean and Joseph Mougel each received $20,000 established artist fellowships, while Brooke Thiele received a $10,000 emerging artist fellowship.<\/p>\n

McLean is an assistant professor in film; Mougel is the area head and associate professor in photography; and Thiele is a lecturer in animation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
