The expansion quadruples the radio observatory\u2019s size, giving it a 10-fold increase in observing power.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019ll please a lot of folks at 51ÁÔÆæ, particularly associate professor of physics David Kaplan, project scientist for the Murchison project. Kaplan\u2019s primary research interests are transient cosmic events, such as supernovae and \u201cfast radio bursts,\u201d and the upgrades are welcome.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_53008\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53008\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-53008\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/11\/array1-300x200-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Students kneel in front of some metal equipment.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-53008\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">51ÁÔÆæ students spent five days last year helping build the antennas for the Murchison Widefield Array. (Contributed photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been working on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mwatelescope.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Murchison Wide Array<\/a> and it\u2019s been producing a lot of science,\u201d Kaplan said. \u201cHaving the increased capacity of 128 new antennas is critical to building on our research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will keep MWA at the scientific forefront for the next five years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phase two began in mid-2016 with the deployment of 72 tiles, arranged in a regular hexagonal configuration that became operational in October. Kaplan sent four physics undergraduate researchers to the Australian outback <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/physics-students-head-australia-sake-science\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to help with the upgrade<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey really enjoyed participating and learning about the technology involved in the project,\u201d Kaplan said. \u201cAnd of course, they saw a unique part of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Will Fiore, a senior physics major from Madison, the project meant his first trip overseas. He enjoyed the \u201cinteresting and strange\u201d locale in the Australian Outback, but also found the work particularly engaging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt made it easier to connect the data I was analyzing with the way it was being collected,\u201d Fiore said. \u201cRadio interferometry is very abstract and something abstract is easier to understand if you\u2019re able to connect it to something you\u2019ve seen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Murchison array is one of four precursor telescopes for the much larger billion-dollar Square Kilometer Array and the only one that is fully operational.
