A collaboration with Interfaith Older Adult Programs, the event saw volunteers matched with seniors to help prepare their homes for winter.<\/p>\n<p>Though 51ÁÔÆæ has been a long-time participant, this year was first that the university served as lead organizer of Make a Difference Day. 51ÁÔÆæ students made up over 600 of the approximately 1,300 people taking part throughout the metro area. They helped close to 300 older residents clean their yards, install storm windows and take care of other timely tasks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-media-post alignleft\" id=\"gallery_post-52920\"><div class=\"image icon-overlay\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/gallery\/uwm-offers-hand-make-difference-day\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/11\/makeadifferenceday_eh_d_4-300x200.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/11\/makeadifferenceday_eh_d_4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/11\/makeadifferenceday_eh_d_4.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><div class=\"icon-large icon-gallery\"><span class=\"text\">View Gallery<\/span><\/div><\/a><\/div><div class=\"title\">51ÁÔÆæ offers a hand for Make a Difference Day<\/div><\/div>\n<p>While there was plenty of activity near campus, groups were sent all around the greater Milwaukee area. The Make-A-Wish Wishmakers on Campus team made short work of the mess of leaves around Whitefish Bay resident Joan Colman\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very pleased with what\u2019s happened with all of this,\u201d said Colman. \u201cThe girls really work hard, I\u2019ll tell you that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many students found the day to be rewarding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Volunteering) just has so much to offer in terms of life in general,\u201d said Bryant Arocho, a sophomore in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning. \u201cYes, you\u2019re working in your free time, but you\u2019re doing it for a good cause and that\u2019s going to shape you as a person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While it cost the students only a few hours of their time, the help offered was invaluable for the seniors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s remarkable what they\u2019ve managed to accomplish in such a short time,\u201d said June Johnson, a Glendale resident. \u201cThey help us stay in our homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Colman agreed. \u201cThere are certain things I just can\u2019t do anymore,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is a great help.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee community took part Saturday in fall Make a Difference Day.
