{"id":52177,"date":"2017-10-17T09:41:39","date_gmt":"2017-10-17T14:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=52177"},"modified":"2024-06-27T11:20:35","modified_gmt":"2024-06-27T16:20:35","slug":"uwms-yan-wins-funding-patient-centered-research-breast-cancer-disparities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwms-yan-wins-funding-patient-centered-research-breast-cancer-disparities\/","title":{"rendered":"51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Yan wins funding for patient-centered research into breast cancer disparities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">MILWAUKEE _ Alice Yan has been funded through a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Pipeline-to-Proposal Award to support a project focused on eliminating disparities in survival rates among young African-American women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The yearlong project,\u00a0 \u201c<span class=\"s2\">Let\u2019s Talk: Engaging Community Stakeholders for Patient-Driven Research to Eliminate Cancer Disparities for Young African American Breast Cancer Survivors<\/span>,\u201d\u00a0 will conduct focus groups to identify the most important issues and needs \u2014 as well as the barriers \u2014 for effective breast cancer care from patients\u2019 and caregivers\u2019 perspectives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Yan<\/span><span class=\"s1\">, an associate professor of community and behavioral health promotion in UW-Milwaukee\u2019s School of Public Health, will use the funds provided through PCORI\u2019s Pipeline to Proposal Awards program to build a partnership among:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">African-American women who were diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 45<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">caregivers\/family members<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">representatives from patient advocacy groups and insurers<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">healthcare providers, and<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">researchers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u201cThe funding allows me to advance my work on patient-centered outcome research,\u201d Yan said. \u00a0\u201cIn particular, the engagement of stakeholders and the partnership building process will lead to the identification of a comparative clinical effectiveness research question related to the cancer control continuum from prevention to survivorship of breast cancer among African-American women diagnosed at 20-45\u00a0years old (young breast cancer survivors) in Southeast Wisconsin. We will focus on Milwaukee County, as it carries the heaviest cancer burden in the state.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe unique aspect of this project is that we propose a patient-centered storytelling approach for engagement and communication.\u201d Yan added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The project will conclude with a patient-centered conference to discuss, address and prioritize research areas of greatest importance. The conference will be co-hosted by the Clinical Cancer Center at Froedtert Hospital &amp; the Medical College of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Public Health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Yan anticipates applying for funding to conduct follow-up research into a question selected by participating cancer survivors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pipeline to Proposal Awards enable individuals and groups that are not typically involved in clinical research to develop the means to develop community-led funding proposals focused on patient-centered comparative effectiveness research. Established by the nonprofit PCORI, the program funds help individuals or groups build community partnerships, develop research capacity, and hone a comparative effectiveness research question that could become the basis of a research funding proposal to submit to PCORI or other health research funders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u201cThe Pipeline to Proposal Awards program is a manifestation of PCORI\u2019s commitment to the meaningful involvement of patients, caregivers, clinicians and other stakeholders in all our research endeavors,\u201d said Jean Slutsky, PA, MSPH, PCORI&#8217;s chief engagement and dissemination officer. \u201cIt provides support to those who may not otherwise have an opportunity to contribute to the field of comparative effectiveness research. We\u2019re pleased to follow the awardees\u2019 progress as they develop partnerships and begin to form research questions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>About PCORI<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute is an independent, nonprofit organization authorized by Congress in 2010 to fund comparative effectiveness research that will provide patients, their caregivers and clinicians with the evidence needed to make better-informed health and healthcare decisions.
