The prize money also supports a 2018 design studio for 51ÁÔÆæ architecture students that will be led by Gang and a faculty member from the architecture school.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51320\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51320\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-51320\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/09\/gang-250x300-0425-aqua-image-001-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"The photo of the tower from below shows its undulating waves of balconies. \" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51320\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Architect Jeanne Gang&#8217;s design for the 82-story Aqua Tower in Chicago captures elements of nature and fosters social interaction.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nominations came from 16 countries on four continents, all of whom were required to demonstrate at least 10 years of proven exceptional practice. Past winners have represented a range of cultures. This year, the judges, who included Robert Greenstreet, dean of 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, chose an American for only the second time since the competition began in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Gang\u2019s body of work spread beyond architecture\u2019s conventional boundaries to pursuits ranging from developing stronger materials to fostering stronger communities. Her approach has resulted in buildings such as Chicago\u2019s 82-story <a href=\"http:\/\/studiogang.com\/project\/aqua-tower\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aqua Tower<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/studiogang.com\/project\/writers-theatre_2\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Writers Theatre<\/a>, in Glencoe, Ill.<\/p>\n<p>A distinguished alumna of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Gang was named the 2016 Architect of the Year by the Architectural Review. She is author of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/studiogang.com\/publication\/reverse-effect-renewing-chicagos-waterways\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reverse Effect: Renewing Chicago\u2019s Waterways<\/a>,\u201d which envisions a radically greener future for the Chicago River.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Marcus Prize is a part of our ongoing commitment to support the growth and development of Milwaukee,\u201d said Steve Marcus, CEO of Marcus Corp.\u00a0and a director of the Marcus Corporation Foundation, adding that excellence in design has a large impact on the reputation of the city.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51321\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51321\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-51321\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/09\/Marcus.Prize_.058-300x200-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"This photo shows the theater building lighted up at night.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51321\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gang created this design for the Writers Theatre in Glencoe, Ill.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 2015 Marcus Prize winner was New York-based architect Joshua Prince Ramus, best known for his work on the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/11651\/seattle-central-library-oma-lmn\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Seattle Central Library<\/a> and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/37736\/dee-and-charles-wyly-theatre-rex-oma\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre in Dallas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the fall 2016 course led by Prince Ramus, and co-taught by Matt Jarosz and Gil Snyder, students reimagined uses for the U.S. Postal Service\u2019s downtown facility on St. Paul Avenue in Milwaukee. Two years ago, the massive building was bought by a Chicago real estate developer attracted to its central location and more than nine acres of riverfront.<\/p>\n<p>Past Marcus Prize winners also have included Sou Fujimoto (Japan), Diebedo Francis Kere (Burkina Faso), Alejandro Aravena (Chile), Frank Barkow (Germany)\u00a0and Winy Maas (The
