{"id":51203,"date":"2017-09-18T12:49:41","date_gmt":"2017-09-18T17:49:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=51203"},"modified":"2024-06-27T11:54:37","modified_gmt":"2024-06-27T16:54:37","slug":"uw-milwaukee-school-information-studies-joins-groundbreaking-study-big-data-ethics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uw-milwaukee-school-information-studies-joins-groundbreaking-study-big-data-ethics\/","title":{"rendered":"UW-Milwaukee School of Information Studies joins groundbreaking study on big data ethics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">MILWAUKEE _\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Michael Zimmer, associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Information Studies and director of the Center for Information Policy Research, will participate in a four year study of the ethics of \u201cbig data,\u201d funded by a $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The project, <span class=\"s3\">PERVADE<\/span> (Pervasive Data Ethics for Computational Research), brings together a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in computational science, research ethics, data practices, law and policy, health information, social computing, qualitative and quantitative research methods, and data privacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe project studies how diverse stakeholders \u2013 big data researchers, platforms, regulators, and user communities \u2013 understand their ethical\u00a0obligations and choices related to computational research that relies on big, pervasive data sets about people,\u201d Zimmer said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Zimmer, one of the seven principal investigators, will lead sub-projects focusing on ethical training and practices of computational researchers, as well as an assessment of the ethical components of large-scale data sharing initiatives among research scientists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Researchers from six institutions are participating in the PERVADE collaboration:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr. Katie Shilton &#8211; College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr. Jessica Vitak &#8211; College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr. Matthew Bietz &#8211; Department of Informatics at the University of California, Irvine<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr. Casey Fiesler &#8211; Department of Information Science at University of Colorado, Boulder<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr. Jacob Metcalf &#8211; Data &amp; Society Research Institute<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr. Arvind Narayanan &#8211; Department of Computer Science at Princeton University<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr. Michael Zimmer &#8211; School of Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The project\u2019s research focus will extend across consumers, big data researchers, commercial providers, and regulators, both domestically and internationally, to explore how these diverse stakeholders understand their ethical obligations and choices, and how their decisions affect data system design and use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Specific issues that PERVADE team will examine include how people experience the reuse of their personal data; what social factors influence people\u2019s willingness to share their data; how and when consent should be given; and how consumers\u2019 concerns can be shared with data system designers and big data researchers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBy empowering researchers with information about the norms and risks of big data research, we can make sure that users of any digital platform are only involved in research in ways they don\u2019t find surprising or unfair,\u201d said Katie Shilton, associate professor in the College of Information Studies at UMD and primary investigator on the grant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The team aims to use project findings to guide best practices for each stakeholder group using decision-support tools, risk measurement methods, public educational materials, and an open dataset of findings by the end of the project in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>About UW-Milwaukee, School of Information Studies<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The <span class=\"s4\">School of Information Studies<\/span>\u00a0at 51ÁÔÆæ offers several degree programs including a bachelor&#8217;s in information science and technology, an ALA-accredited master of library and information science, a master of science in information science &amp;
