  {"id":510,"date":"2012-01-11T23:28:21","date_gmt":"2012-01-11T23:28:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=510"},"modified":"2017-11-29T12:48:37","modified_gmt":"2017-11-29T18:48:37","slug":"sensing-in-a-flash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/sensing-in-a-flash\/","title":{"rendered":"Sensing in a flash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Combine the fiberoptic, water-monitoring technology developed by chemist Peter Geissinger with a local business that helps industries treat their wastewater, and you have a sought-after solution that delivers at the speed of light.<\/p>\n<p>This patented work is the latest 51ÁÔÆæ research to be licensed by a company through the <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.uwmresearchfoundation.org\/\">51ÁÔÆæ Research Foundation.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Milwaukee-based Advanced Chemical Systems Inc. (ACS) sells wastewater pretreatment systems and chemicals to industrial users, and also provides contaminant removal services. The company\u2019s challenge is to obtain real-time, reliable information about the level of particular contaminants in wastewater.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, accurate water analysis has to be completed in an off-site lab. The testing can take weeks. Geissinger developed a water-quality monitoring system that immediately detects targeted contaminants using sensor information transported through light.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this system can be developed economically, everyone\u2019s going to want this for their pretreatment systems,\u201d says ACS President Tom Dougherty. \u201cIt could be a game-changer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The partners are determined to find out. Dougherty applied for a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant with three different federal agencies.<\/p>\n<p>All three SBIR proposals were well received, with the winning award backed by the National Science Foundation. \u201cThe SBIR grant is a very strong external validation of the work,\u201d Dougherty says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPartnering with an established company has been very beneficial because it provided clear focus on specific sensing applications needed by potential customers,\u201d says Geissinger.<\/p>\n<p>He and his postdoctoral researcher, Paul Henning, have brought the system this far with funding from the 51ÁÔÆæ Research Foundation\u2019s Bradley Catalyst Grant program.<\/p>\n<p>Going forward, the team hopes to make the equipment more cost-effective and portable so it can be used in the field.
