This inaugural white coat ceremony also included current nursing majors, who had never been recognized in this fashion. Approximately 250 nursing majors took part in this \u201ccatch-up\u201d ceremony; future white coat ceremonies will include only incoming nursing students.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_50538\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50538\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50538\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/08\/whitecoat300x200-20170828_IMC__EH_0020-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"A nursing student puts on a white coat with help from another woman. \" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-50538\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Senior Allison Pichler dons her white coat with help from College of Nursing Dean Kim Litwack as Provost Johannes Britz looks on. 51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Elora Hennessey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The ceremony was supported by a grant from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gold-foundation.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arnold P. Gold Foundation<\/a>, which also provided pins symbolizing the oath taken by 51ÁÔÆæ nursing majors during the event. \u00a0The coats were purchased with funds from the College of Nursing <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/nursing\/about\/black-and-gold\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Black and Gold Committee<\/a>. \u00a0The Nursing Student Association assisted with the programming.<\/p>\n<p>Associate professor Julia Snethen, who secured the Gold grant, said the ceremony was the result of a student initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re the ones who came up with this idea, and they organized the program,\u201d Snethen said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_50539\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50539\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50539\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/08\/whitecoat2-300x200-20170829_IMC__EH_0000-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"A student smiles as the nursing dean helps her don her white coat.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-50539\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Senior Anila Ashraf is congratulated by 51ÁÔÆæ Provost Johannes Britz. (51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Elora Hennessey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nursing senior Morgan Verkuilen one of the student organizers, said the ceremony is a recognition that admission to the nursing program is itself a significant accomplishment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting into the program is really hard, and it\u2019s important that students get to celebrate that together,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Connor Stone, Verkuilen\u2019s partner in the initiative, said community-building was a motivator for him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really wanted to bring the students together as a community,\u201d Stone said. \u201cWe have a number of great organizations in the college, and we thought this was a way to help get students involved in them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Snethen said the ceremony serves as a \u201cbookend\u201d of the students\u2019 academic career, along with the pinning ceremony that marks the end of a nurse\u2019s education.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The College of Nursing held its first white coat ceremony for nursing majors on Monday, Aug. 28.
