She had been hoping to take some time off before going on to graduate school, and the Fulbright is making it possible.<\/p>\n<p>Amro became interested in Korea through the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/esl\/current-students\/conversation-partner-program\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Conversation Partner<\/a> program in the English as a Second Language area at 51ÁÔÆæ. She\u2019d always been interested in Asia, but meeting Korean students as conversation partners got her to focus on that country.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48978\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48978\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-48978\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/06\/conversationpartners-3x2-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Two students sit and talk.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48978\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Talking with students from Korea in the Conversation Partners program at 51ÁÔÆæ got Haneen Amro interested in visiting the country. (51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Troye Fox)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI met a couple of Korean international students, and from there my interest just grew,\u201d she recalled. \u201cI started looking into the culture, learning the language, and meeting more Korean people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her interest was so intense that she visited Korea in March 2016, visiting places she heard about from Korean friends she\u2019d met at 51ÁÔÆæ.<\/p>\n<p>She learned about the scholarship from a friend who went to Malaysia on a Fulbright.\u00a0 When she learned that the program could take her to Korea, she decided to apply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know how prestigious the grant was, which was a blessing in disguise,&#8221; she laughs, \u201cbecause I didn\u2019t stress about it during the application process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Milwaukee native, Amro was well-traveled before she went to Korea. She spent her first two years of high school studying in Jordan, which presented special challenges. Her first year was in an English-speaking school where she found the curriculum more rigorous than she was accustomed to. Her second year was in an Arabic-speaking school, and she spent long hours mastering the language to keep up with her studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose two years were tough, but I learned a lot,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Her interest in communication stems in part from that experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommunication is such an important part of living,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen I was younger, I was introverted, and I saw that having the ability to voice your own thoughts is really important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Back in America, her work as a volunteer also shaped her interest in communication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI volunteered at a hospital and at the Urban Ecology Center in Washington Park, and I met kids who had fallen behind in language, or haven\u2019t had the economic resources to advance their communication skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was also deeply impressed by children she\u2019d met last summer in Palestine who had lost their ability to speak, either through injury or trauma.<\/p>\n<p>Though she says her volunteerism has slowed a bit while in college, it\u2019s difficult to see how.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese days I volunteer with <a href=\"http:\/\/marufmilwaukee.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ma\u2019ruf Milwaukee<\/a>, working with Syrian and Burmese who come to Milwaukee,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m mostly helping children do their homework, and English.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And of course, her volunteer work as a conversation partner is what led her to her Fulbright-sponsored sojourn.<\/p>\n<p>Amro\u2019s volunteerism will continue unabated in Korea. Besides teaching English to high schoolers and adults, she plans to work with North Korean refugees. But that\u2019s not all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m also going to look into English tutoring students with disabilities, or students whose parents can\u2019t afford what they call \u2018afterschool academies.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She has already reached out to a member of her Fulbright cohort to further her academic interests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to look into what opportunities Korea provides children with disabilities,\u201d Amro said.<\/p>\n<p>That her path to Korea should pass through 51ÁÔÆæ seems even more improbable when you consider that Amro is a transfer student: Despite having two scholarships to Marquette, she came to 51ÁÔÆæ in 2014, a decision she doesn\u2019t regret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was hesitant at first, but I love the diversity here, and people were so welcoming,\u201d she said. \u201cI love that I have been able to meet so many people from different parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got to branch out and broaden my horizon and my mind and learn more about other people and other countries and other languages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her academic experience has been similarly gratifying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy professors have been amazing,\u201d she said. \u201cOne, Mary Ann Fitzgerald, is the reason I came to look into education for children with special needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fitzgerald, an associate lecturer in exceptional education who wrote a letter of recommendation for Amro, calls her student amazing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was thrilled to learn she\u2019d be teaching in Korea,\u201d said Fitzgerald, who had Amro in her education class \u201cThe Exceptional Individual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough I did encourage her to go to a country I\u2019d be more likely to visit,\u201d Fitzgerald added with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Amro is scheduled to stay in Korea for a year, but she\u2019s already thinking about applying for a second year.<\/p>\n<p>Though things have fallen neatly into place, Amro is somewhat amazed that her 51ÁÔÆæ journey is now taking her to Korea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I had asked my high school self, \u2018Do you think you\u2019d end up working abroad?\u2019 I would not have believed
