{"id":48967,"date":"2017-06-28T15:29:17","date_gmt":"2017-06-28T20:29:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=48967"},"modified":"2017-06-28T15:29:17","modified_gmt":"2017-06-28T20:29:17","slug":"alum-wins-malkiel-young-faculty-leaders-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/alum-wins-malkiel-young-faculty-leaders-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Alum wins Malkiel young faculty leaders award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>51ÁÔÆæ alum Ashley Glassburn Falzetti (MA, philosophy, 2006), has been named a <a href=\"http:\/\/woodrow.org\/fellowships\/nwmscholars\/\">2017 Nancy Weiss Malkiel Scholar<\/a> by the \u00a0Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Falzetti, an assistant professor of women&#8217;s and gender studies at Eastern Michigan University, was one of 10 young faculty leaders named by the foundation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48971\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48971\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-48971\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/06\/Falzetti-pic-2017-250x300-260x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48971\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ashley Glassburn Falzetti<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Falzetti will receive a 12-month award of $17,500 while working toward tenure. The award is structured to free the time of junior faculty who have passed their midpoint tenure review so they can make their fields and campuses more inclusive.<\/p>\n<p>Associate professor of philosophy Andrea Westlund was Falzetti\u2019s thesis adviser at 51ÁÔÆæ and also knew her through the graduate certificate in women\u2019s studies program, in which Westland also teaches. She pointed to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emich.edu\/wgstudies\/faculty\/falzetti\/untitled.php\">Falzetti\u2019s work<\/a> on Algonquin language revitalization and critical ethnic studies as ways she engages both community youth and graduate students in her academic interests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s really a perfect candidate for this award because she\u2019s always been motivated by her involvement and commitment to her community,\u201d Westlund says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur department really focuses on mentoring students and placing them in strong Ph.D. programs, so I was really pleased at her success at Rutgers (where Falzetti earned her doctorate), which has one of the top women and gender studies PhD programs in the country,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited and proud to see her flourishing,\u201d Westlund said. \u201cWe hope to have her here for a talk in the not-too-distant future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Malkiel Scholars Award supports junior faculty whose research focuses on contemporary American history, politics, culture, and society, and who are committed to the creation of an inclusive campus community for underrepresented students and scholars. The award is funded by the Andrew W.
