Alumni of 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s School of Architecture and Urban Planning, the only accredited architecture school in Wisconsin, are a key part of the effort.<\/p>\n<p>From the new Milwaukee Bucks arena district to the Couture apartment high-rise to the restoration of historic buildings, 51ÁÔÆæ alumni are helping reshape the heart of the city.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few of the 51ÁÔÆæ grads involved in some of the new developments.<\/p>\n<h2>The Couture and Lakefront Gateway Plaza<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48675\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48675\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48675 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/06\/ArchitectureListicle_Couture750x500.jpg\" alt=\"Architects stand on a downtown street.\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/06\/ArchitectureListicle_Couture750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/06\/ArchitectureListicle_Couture750x500-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48675\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">51ÁÔÆæ alums Chad Griswold, Matt Rinka and Steve Morales of Rinka Chung are designing in the new Couture Building on the lakefront, which will fill this space in the Milwaukee skyline. (51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Pete Amland)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Matt Rinka, Steve Morales and Chad Griswold of Rinka Chung are the architects designing the $122 million Couture, a 44-story apartment building on the site of the former Downtown Transit Center at the end of E. Michigan Street. Groundbreaking for a building that will reshape the downtown skyline is scheduled for December 2017.\u00a0 The firm is also working on the new Lakefront Gateway Plaza across the street that will tie the Couture to Discovery World, the Milwaukee Art Museum, Summerfest and other lakefront developments. In addition, Rinka Chung is involved in the Bucks\u2019 entertainment block and arena district, among numerous other projects. Rinka Chung also designed the Moderne, a 30-story residential building at the southwest corner of N. Old World Third Street and W. Juneau Avenue that went up in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe like to think our projects are a critical part of the downtown boom,\u201d said Rinka, who founded the firm in 2006. \u00a0Morales, who grew up on the south side and \u2014 like Rinka \u2014 has worked all over the country, said: \u201cI wanted to come back and make a difference in my hometown.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Welford Sanders Lofts<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48672\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48672\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48672 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/06\/ArchitectureListicle_WelfordSanders750x500.jpg\" alt=\"Corey Lapworth stands in the former Nunn Bush factory.\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/06\/ArchitectureListicle_WelfordSanders750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/06\/ArchitectureListicle_WelfordSanders750x500-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48672\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Corey Lapworth, a 51ÁÔÆæ alum and principal at Continuum Architects, is leading the renovation of the former Nunn Bush factory into the Welford Sanders lofts. One goal is to retain as much as possible of the original building. (51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Pete Amland)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Welford Sanders Lofts project, just north of downtown, has a number of ties to 51ÁÔÆæ. Alum Corey Lapworth, a principal at Continuum Architects + Planners, is leading the project. The apartment and office complex, being developed in a 184,843-square-foot former Nunn Bush shoe factory, is named for a late faculty member of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning.<\/p>\n<p>Lapworth took courses from Welford Sanders, a pioneering urban planner who died in May 2015. A statue of Sanders, the former head of the Martin Luther King Economic Development Corporation, will be erected in a courtyard at the building.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the architecture school\u2019s Community Design Solutions center helped brainstorm ideas for repurposing the building with community leaders and other interested parties a few years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Working to design apartments and offices within a historic building is both challenging and rewarding, said Lapworth. \u201cWe have to decide what we take out and what we keep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s trying to preserve as much as possible of the building\u2019s original architecture, which includes high ceilings, large windows, wood floors and lots of brick. (51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Pete Amland)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Numerous 51ÁÔÆæ-trained architects are involved in the new Bucks arena, scheduled to open in 2018, and the entertainment areas around it.<\/p>\n<p>One firm, American Design Inc., has an entire team of 51ÁÔÆæ grads involved in the project. Jim Piwoni is managing architect at the firm, and team members Nathan Elliott, Ryan Jones, Christine Krueger, Elizabeth Winters and Matt Due are all 51ÁÔÆæ architecture degree holders.<\/p>\n<p>American Design is the architect for the parking structure facades and the\u00a0sky bridge connecting the parking structure with the arena. The frame for that was lifted into place in April. (51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Pete Amland)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Milwaukee\u2019s \u00a0Germania Building is getting a facelift that will transform it from an office building to apartments, offices and mixed use retail. At the time it was built in 1896, it was the largest office building in Milwaukee. Jason Korb and Ali Kopyt of Korb &amp; Associates are part of the project. \u00a0Korb has a special fondness for the building, well-known for its copper-trimmed Prussian helmet roof ornaments, since he once worked in an office there.<\/p>\n<p>Redoing a structure built in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century while trying to retain some of its distinctive features is a challenge, Kopyt said. She has to work closely with construction crews to deal with issues that come up when they discover surprises that don\u2019t show up until a wall is opened, for example.<\/p>\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ, with its close ties to the city, really prepared her for the work she\u2019s doing, Kopyt said. \u00a0\u201cIt was a fabulous place to be. We weren\u2019t just in a classroom. We were out the community. (51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Pete Amland)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mike and Stephanie Hacker, both 51ÁÔÆæ architecture alums, love downtown Milwaukee so much that they held their wedding reception in the middle of a downtown street, receiving special permission to close it down for the occasion.\u00a0 The Hackers were also the first-ever married couple to win GOLD (Graduate of the Last Decade) awards at the same time (2013) from the 51ÁÔÆæ Alumni Association.<\/p>\n<p>Stephanie is now a senior planner\/associate with GRAEF. Mike Hacker is an associate\/architect with Bray Architects. He helped lead a project that transformed an almost 100-year-old Walker\u2019s Point manufacturing facility, just south of downtown, into the firm\u2019s corporate headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>He loves being part of Milwaukee\u2019s locally bred and thriving architecture community \u2014 \u201c75 percent of our staff are 51ÁÔÆæ grads, and I\u2019m proud of that,\u201d Hacker said. \u201cSARUP has such a strong connection around the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He likes the city\u2019s combination of amenities and its ability to combine the new and the historic. \u201cWe took a building from 1918 and
