Legal scholar Mary Sarah Bilder will deliver the inaugural Jere D. McGaffey Lecture in history on April 3, discussing \u201cNotes on the 1787 Constitutional Convention,\u201d the late President James Madison\u2019s account of the drafting of the U.S. Constitution.<\/p>\n

Bilder, the Founders Professor of Law at Boston College Law School, will speak at 3:30 p.m. April 3 in Greene Hall.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re delighted to have the opportunity to host Dr. Bilder,\u201d said Amanda I. Seligman, chair of 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Department of History. \u201cHer important work helps us to rethink the founding of the United States and how one of the founders rethought the nation\u2019s seminal moment in the decades following the Constitutional Convention.<\/p>\n

Madison\u2019s \u201cNotes\u201d have been viewed as the authoritative account of a formative American event. In her research, Bilder argues that Madison revised the \u201cNotes\u201d to a far greater extent than previously recognized, and explores how those changes have affected our understanding of the convention and the document it produced.<\/p>\n

Bilder\u2019s book \u201cMadison\u2019s Hand: Revising the Constitutional Convention,\u201d won the Bancroft Prize<\/a> for books about\u00a0diplomacy\u00a0or the history of the\u00a0Americas. Her scholarship draws on digital technologies and traditional textual analysis, resulting in a biography of a document that developed a life and character all its own.<\/p>\n

The lecture was made possible by a grant from Jere McGaffey, a retired partner in the Foley & Lardner law firm. McGaffey asked that his gift \u201cremind the audience of the continuing relevance of historical scholarship to illuminating the present.\u201d<\/p>\n
