{"id":41689,"date":"2016-12-23T13:42:10","date_gmt":"2016-12-23T19:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=41689"},"modified":"2023-05-10T15:42:53","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T20:42:53","slug":"students-help-nonprofits-improve-information-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/students-help-nonprofits-improve-information-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Students help nonprofits improve their information technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cIf this isn\u2019t what 51ÁÔÆæ is about, I don\u2019t know what is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ Chancellor Mark Mone was referring to <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/informationstudies\/nonprofit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nonprofIT<\/a>, the School of Information Studies program that matches local nonprofits with teams of SOIS students who provide information technology assistance that the organizations might not otherwise be able to afford.<\/p>\n<p>Mone spoke at a showcase this month at which the teams described their experiences working with each other and their clients.<\/p>\n<p>This fall, 20 students offered their services to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/brpf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Bryon Riesch Paralysis Foundation<\/a>, to redesign an outdated website<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/walkerspoint.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Walker\u2019s Point Youth and Family Center<\/a>, to update the website with new functionality<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/literacyservices.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Literacy Services of Wisconsin<\/a>, to create a website with an emphasis on responsiveness to various devices<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.armaedfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ARMA International Educational Foundation<\/a>, to build a website with an emphasis on member self-service<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/gpsed.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GPS Education Partners<\/a>, to develop a social media campaign on Twitter and Facebook.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is the fifth semester that nonprofIT has given students the opportunity to take their skills beyond the academic setting to assist nonprofits. In return for their efforts, the students learn to work with clients that have deadlines and practical problems that need solutions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41690\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41690\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-41690 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2016\/12\/showcase-group-fall16-2-300x200-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"School of Information Studies students showed Chancellor Mark Mone their work in helping nonprofits improve their information technology.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">School of Information Studies students showed Chancellor Mark Mone their work in helping nonprofits improve their information technology.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>NonprofIT recently received a $50,000 grant from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greatermilwaukeefoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greater Milwaukee Foundation<\/a> to support the expansion of the program.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the nonprofits\u2019 staffs, the students get the guidance of a mentor from the local business community.<\/p>\n<p>Mone praised the \u201clearning through doing\u201d approach to the project, as well as the positive impact the program has on Milwaukee.
