The top ranking comes just three years after the campus was named a bronze-level campus by the league.<\/p>\n<p>With the announcement, 51ÁÔÆæ joins a cutting-edge group of colleges and universities across the United States that are transforming their campuses and the communities around them. There are now 164 Bicycle Friendly Universities in 44 states and Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>Kate Nelson, chief sustainability officer at 51ÁÔÆæ, called the ranking a validation of the efforts of many members of the campus to make 51ÁÔÆæ more bike-friendly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was surprised that we made the jump from bronze to gold,\u201d Nelson said. \u201cBut we won\u2019t rest on our laurels. Right now we\u2019re looking providing more convenient and secure parking at various \u2018hubs\u2019 on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nelson said longer-range goals include working with students to find better access to Milwaukee\u2019s bike trails and safer routes to Milwaukee\u2019s Riverwest neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ Chancellor Mark Mone, an avid cyclist, pointed to 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s bicycling initiatives as one more example of how the university improves the quality of life of the city it calls home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bike culture at 51ÁÔÆæ and throughout Milwaukee is growing in so many positive ways,\u201d he said. \u201cOur students, employees and neighbors have all had a tremendous impact on our status as a bicycle friendly university.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bill Nesper, the programs director for the bicycle league, praised the newly named universities for being innovative in making bicycling a safe, convenient and enjoyable option for students, staff and visitors.<\/p>\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s ranking stems from the university\u2019s efforts to encourage bicycling by making it an easy option for transportation. The campus provides amenities such as Bublr bike-share stations, commuter showers and campus bike fix-it stations. Incentives such as community bike challenges have also encouraged the campus community to bike more.<\/p>\n<p>With the new ranking, the league will give 51ÁÔÆæ access to a variety of free tools and technical assistance to become even more bicycle-friendly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen colleges and universities invest in bicycling, great things happen,\u201d Nelson said. \u201cStudents have a healthier way to commute, faculty and staff save money on parking, and the community has a leader at the table for city-wide bicycle advocacy.<\/p>\n<p>Other universities in Wisconsin rated as bicycle-friendly are UW-Madison, with a gold rating, and several at bronze: Carroll and UW System campuses La Crosse, Eau Claire and Stout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">To learn more about the\u00a0program, visit the league online at\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bikeleague.org\/content\/51-new-and-renewing-bicycle-friendly-universities\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.bikeleague.org\/content\/51-new-and-renewing-bicycle-friendly-universities<\/a>\u2028.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>About 51ÁÔÆæ<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recognized as one of the nation\u2019s 115 top research universities, UW-Milwaukee provides a world-class education to 26,000 students from 89 countries on a budget of $667 million.
