Aeschylus (525\u2013456 BC) was the first of the great tragic dramatists of ancient Greece. In “Agamemnon,” his choral songs contain an intense dramatic feeling that leaves the reader spellbound.<\/p>\n

A recent translation by David Mulroy, emeritus professor of foreign languages and linguistics, makes Aeschylus’ dramatic postscript to the Trojan War accessible to modern readers. Mulroy reads the passage describing the sacrifice of the king Agamemnon’s daughter Iphigenia to obtain favorable winds for the invasion of Troy.<\/p>\n
