  {"id":3095,"date":"2012-06-27T13:48:02","date_gmt":"2012-06-27T18:48:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=3095"},"modified":"2023-05-10T16:05:04","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T21:05:04","slug":"bridging-a-special-needs-gap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/bridging-a-special-needs-gap\/","title":{"rendered":"Bridging a special needs gap"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_3096\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3096\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2012\/06\/bridge_2_independence_j-vtq3ky.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3096 \" title=\"Building a Bridge to Independence\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2012\/06\/bridge_2_independence_j-vtq3ky.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2012\/06\/bridge_2_independence_j-vtq3ky.jpg 600w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2012\/06\/bridge_2_independence_j-vtq3ky-300x157.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3096\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the goals of the Bridge to Independence and Training Lay Trainers projects is to help families and health care workers communicate about the child\u2019s needs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Families caring for a child with a serious, chronic illness have enough to worry about without trying to deal with the confusing healthcare system.<\/p>\n<p>A partnership involving faculty from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Education (SOE), the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Children\u2019s Hospital of Wisconsin is working to make it easier for families to learn how to care for children with special needs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3111\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3111\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2012\/06\/bridge_2_independence_j2-1mp2rl0.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3111 \" title=\"Emergency Planning Book Cover\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2012\/06\/bridge_2_independence_j2-1mp2rl0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3111\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The guide can be used at home or in clinics to help care for a child with special needs, but also can help families be prepared for emergencies.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe have developed a curriculum to help caregivers learn how to provide quality, safe care for their children,\u201d says Simone Concei\u00e7\u00e3o. Concei\u00e7\u00e3o, associate professor in the SOE\u2019s Department of Administrative Leadership, is the 51ÁÔÆæ leader of two related projects \u2013Bridge to Independence and Training Lay Trainers. John Gordon of the Department of Pediatrics is the principal investigator and Sarah Johaningsmeir is the Research Coordinator from MCW. Holly Colby is the partner with Children\u2019s Hospital of Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, what Concei\u00e7\u00e3o and her colleagues are doing is designing simple, straightforward educational materials to teach parents and other caregivers about their child\u2019s condition and how to manage it. The initial materials were originally produced as part of the Bridge to Independence project for nurses and case managers who work with families and caregivers.<\/p>\n<p>However, the partnership then received a two-year, $200,000 grant to expand the program, using the same curriculum materials. The resulting Training Lay Trainers project prepares parents of children with special healthcare needs to teach necessary skills to other parents of children with similar needs. \u201cWe want to train lay people to teach other caregivers,\u201d says Concei\u00e7\u00e3o. The first training session was held in mid-June.<\/p>\n<p>The Training Lay Trainers grant is funded through the Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program, which MCW oversees. The funding is from endowments set up in 2004 at the state\u2019s two medical schools with money from the conversion of the former Blue Cross &amp; Blue Shield United of Wisconsin to a for-profit company.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3109\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3109\" style=\"width: 303px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2012\/06\/bridge4-1pmjv8p.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3109 \" title=\"Page\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2012\/06\/bridge4-1pmjv8p.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"303\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3109\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The text and graphics were designed with health literacy principles in mind, and include plain language, short sentences, text boxes and bulleted lists.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to 51ÁÔÆæ, MCW and Children\u2019s Hospital of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services\u2019 Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN) Program and the Milwaukee Bureau of Child Welfare are partners in the Training Lay Trainers project.<\/p>\n<p>The information that she and others developed for both projects is designed to be easy for parents and other caregivers to use, says Concei\u00e7\u00e3o, who specializes in adult education. \u201cWe used health literacy principles in designing the materials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The written text uses short sentences, active voice, plain language, pictures, examples and video\/audio resources. There are plenty of graphics, lots of white space, text boxes, bulleted lists and other design elements to make the material easy to read. The approach blends patient stories, information on the child\u2019s health condition, action steps for caregivers and resources and forms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea is to make it easier for families and medical people to communicate about the child\u2019s needs. The materials developed for use by nurses and case managers can be used in the hospital, at home or in clinics. It can be used in person, during phone conversations, through email and over the Web. \u201cWe want to help them become more self-sufficient,\u201d says Concei\u00e7\u00e3o.
