{"id":29796,"date":"2016-03-01T12:00:56","date_gmt":"2016-03-01T18:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=29796"},"modified":"2023-05-10T16:06:20","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T21:06:20","slug":"corktown-explores-gentrification-in-detroit-and-milwaukee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/corktown-explores-gentrification-in-detroit-and-milwaukee\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Corktown\u2019 explores gentrification in Detroit and Milwaukee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In preparing for \u201cCorktown,\u201d a play about gentrification set in Detroit\u2019s oldest surviving neighborhood, the director, set designers and a group of artists visited an old coke fuel plant near Milwaukee\u2019s inner harbor.<\/p>\n<p>On their most recent visit, the group learned the building was going to be razed and replaced with condos, according to Rebecca Holderness, director of \u201cCorktown\u201d and associate professor of acting in the UW-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts.<\/p>\n<p>That change reflected the ideas explored in the play, March 2-6 at the 51ÁÔÆæ Mainstage Theatre, as well as influencing the aesthetic for the production\u2019s set and set dressings. A collaboration of graffiti murals by artist James Tomasello, TRUE Skool art director, and his students, along with 51ÁÔÆæ community art students of Senior Lecturer Raoul Deal, will be displayed in the theater to transport the audience to &#8220;Corktown.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Written by Jeff Augustin, \u201cCorktown\u201d explores the impact of gentrification in a neighborhood that is half as old as the city itself. Parallels with Milwaukee are obvious.<br \/>\n<div class=\"inline-media-post alignleft\" id=\"video_post-29770\"><div class=\"image icon-overlay\"><a class=\"image video-link\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/d-2lmSYqayw?autoplay=1&enablejsapi=1&origin=https:\/\/uwm.edu\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2016\/02\/grafetti-300x200.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2016\/02\/grafetti-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2016\/02\/grafetti.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><div class=\"icon-large icon-video\"><span class=\"text\">Play Video<\/span><\/div><\/a><\/div><div class=\"title\">51ÁÔÆæ art students collaborate in &#8216;Corktown&#8217; production<\/div><\/div>\n\u201cThe subject is the push and pull within a community \u2013 the downturns and upturns, the transformation of different neighborhoods,\u201d Holderness said.<\/p>\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s production goes beyond the play to encourage the Milwaukee community to explore the impact of change \u2013 positive and negative.<\/p>\n<p>Deal, coordinator of the Community Arts BA program, focused his Introduction to Community Arts class in the fall semester on art and gentrification. 51ÁÔÆæ students worked with high school artists from TRUE Skool, which uses urban arts to engage young people in social justice, community service and civic engagement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorktown\u201d is a good fit for 51ÁÔÆæ actors because it focuses on a diverse group of young people coming of age in the neighborhood, Holderness said.<\/p>\n<p>One of the young characters is a young graffiti artist who is featured in a new gallery taking advantage of inexpensive gallery space in the downtrodden neighborhood, sparking more artists to move into the neighborhood and attracting the interest of developers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the artists move in, the neighborhood becomes more attractive to developers, but their interests are not always aligned with the concerns of neighbors,\u201d Deal said.<\/p>\n<p>The play doesn\u2019t take a position on gentrification. \u201cIt encourages the viewer to think about the original history and beauty of a particular community and why it\u2019s important to preserve that,\u201d Holderness said.<\/p>\n<p>Using art as a vehicle to foster conversations about &#8211; and find sustainable solutions to social challenges &#8211; is part of Peck School of the Arts\u2019 core mission, according to Holderness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that for us to reach out to TRUE Skool and collaborate with them through Raoul\u2019s class, then work with a new playwright and even commission some new art from a Milwaukee-based artist, all affirms this idea that we are part of Milwaukee. It also affirms that we are a place where a wide diversity of students and artists can find education and expression. It reflects the city and invites the city in,\u201d Holderness said<\/p>\n<p>The exploration of this theme will continue in 51ÁÔÆæ Theatre\u2019s next Mainstage Theatre production, \u201cHot L Baltimore.\u201d Opening April 27 and directed by Bill Watson, professor of theater, \u201cHot L Baltimore\u201d explores the impact of gentrification on a collection of down-and-out misfits in a rundown hotel in Baltimore.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>51ÁÔÆæ students and local artists collaborated on the upcoming production of &#8220;Corktown,&#8221; which explores the issues surrounding gentrification of an old Detroit neighborhood.
