{"id":19109,"date":"2015-06-24T00:01:18","date_gmt":"2015-06-24T05:01:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=19109"},"modified":"2015-12-23T05:01:26","modified_gmt":"2015-12-23T11:01:26","slug":"uwm-choir-performs-with-rolling-stones-at-summerfest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwm-choir-performs-with-rolling-stones-at-summerfest\/","title":{"rendered":"51ÁÔÆæ choir performs with Rolling Stones at Summerfest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the Rolling Stones wanted a choir to sing with them during Tuesday\u2019s performance at Summerfest, the legendary rockers found what they needed at 51ÁÔÆæ.<\/p>\n<p>Two dozen members of the 51ÁÔÆæ Concert Chorale, the school\u2019s elite choral group, joined the Stones on stage at the world\u2019s largest music festival. For the students, it was the biggest crowd \u2013 and biggest thrill \u2013 of their budding careers.<\/p>\n<p>Jorge Quintero, 37, of Chicago, was excited by the opportunity to rock after a career in professional ballet and mostly classical training while working on a degree in voice and dance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Rolling Stones are a part of everyone\u2019s music upbringing,\u201d Quintero said. \u201cI mean, my parents played the Rolling Stones all the time. There are songs you can\u2019t ever disassociate from your life, like \u2018Satisfaction,\u2019 and \u2018You Can\u2019t Always Get What You Want.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19128\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19128\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2015\/06\/TMJChorale-2b1fj83.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19128\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2015\/06\/TMJChorale-2b1fj83-300x189.jpg\" alt=\"Todd Hicks, of TMJ4, interviews the 51ÁÔÆæ Concert Chorale at Summerfest the morning after the choir perfomed with the Rolling Stones. (<em>51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Rebecca Ottman<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For Jennifer Hansen, 29, of Janesville, the music evoked memories of her late father and his collection of vinyl Stones albums.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he would probably be pretty impressed\u201d if he could have been at the show, said Hansen, who will fly to Los Angeles on Saturday for intensive training with the prestigious <a href=\"http:\/\/operaworks.org\">OperaWorks<\/a> program.<\/p>\n<p>The Stones came to 51ÁÔÆæ in part because they wanted a choral sound, said Zack Durlam, director of choral activities at the university. But one hallmark of the program at the Peck School of the Arts is instruction that encourages students to \u201cbe as versatile as they want to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile not everyone will get to perform with the Rolling Stones, everyone gets opportunities to perform in unique ways,\u201d Durlam said.<\/p>\n<p>Another big plus was choir members\u2019 already extensive experience on stage. A half-dozen of the choir\u2019s 31 members were absent Tuesday because they are involved in summer training programs or other projects in Europe and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Quintero said he felt privileged to perform with such a talented group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a professional dancer and danced for a really long time, but voice and vocal performance is a completely different kind of discipline. You\u2019re completely vulnerable when you sing,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was a little intimidating at first, but it\u2019s become such an amazing experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both students said they felt fortunate to be studying in Milwaukee, with its many theater, music and dance companies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMilwaukee is just booming with art,\u201d Hansen said. \u201cIt\u2019s a very classical friendly city as well. We have several opera companies. You can always find a show going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quintero said that while performing with the Stones at Summerfest was \u201ca dream,\u201d he also treasured an April concert the choir did at the Milwaukee Art Museum.
