Many of these are so severe they require surgical treatment.<\/p>\n<p>But now, Kenosha-based toolmaker Snap-on Inc. has introduced a new product created by engineers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee \u2013 an industrial wrench designed to reduce shoulder, hand and back injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Snap-on officials introduced the new tool at a public ceremony June 10.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18988\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18988\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2015\/06\/Nairah-rwqglz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18988 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2015\/06\/Nairah-rwqglz.jpg\" alt=\"Naira Campbell-Kyureghyan\" width=\"200\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2015\/06\/Nairah-rwqglz.jpg 200w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2015\/06\/Nairah-rwqglz-187x300.jpg 187w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Naira Campbell-Kyureghyan displays the specialty wrench created by her research team in collaboration with Snap-on Industrial. (<em>51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Derek Rickert<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe future of work in critical industries like public utilities depends upon innovation that brings more safety and greater productivity to the worksite,\u201d said Andy Ginger, president of Snap-on Industrial.\u00a0\u201cSnap-on is exceptionally proud to introduce this completely new gas meter service solution in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ faculty members Naira Campbell-Kyureghyan and Benjamin Church, and alumnus Patrick Dix made and tested the wrench with the input from 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Consortium for Advanced Research in Gas Industries (CARGI), an organization of member companies in the gas industry. CARGI, formed by Campbell-Kyureghyan in 2010, is dedicated to improving safety and productivity for its private-sector and utility members.<\/p>\n<p>Gas meter technicians currently use adjustable pipe wrenches, which can slip when significant force is applied, causing injuries that often require surgery. The new tool has a longer handle, designed to work with several interchangeable heads, so that technicians don\u2019t have to carry the added the weight of multiple specialty wrenches in their tool bags.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18987\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18987\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2015\/06\/snap-on-students-2dpqrli.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18987 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2015\/06\/snap-on-students-2dpqrli.jpg\" alt=\"Recent 51ÁÔÆæ alums Patrick Loeshek and Alexa Hernandez \" width=\"300\" height=\"278\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18987\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Recent 51ÁÔÆæ alums Patrick Loeshek and Alexa Hernandez are among the students who worked on research projects in Naira Campbell-Kyureghyan&#8217;s lab. (<em>51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Derek Rickert<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBased on our investigations and input from our gas industry partners, we determined that something must be done to prevent these devastating and costly injuries,\u201d said Campbell-Kyureghyan. \u201cOur innovations and research-based training continues to make an impact on many people, including the most important impact of all \u2013 saving lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Snap-on entered a license agreement with the 51ÁÔÆæ Research Foundation in October 2013 to commercialize the gas-meter wrench.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublic-private research partnerships such as this are not only vitally important to our regional and state economies \u2013 they are transformational,\u201d said Mark A. Mone, 51ÁÔÆæ chancellor. \u201cTogether, Snap-on Inc. and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\u00a0are positively impacting thousands of lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis collaboration represents a triple-win. A local business has a new product to bring to market. Utility workers\u00a0have a tool that prevents on-the-job injuries. Students are engaged in research with real-world application, making them industry-ready,\u201d said Brett Peters, dean of 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s College of Engineering &amp; Applied Science. \u201cThese are the ways we seek to change the world by starting in our own community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Campbell-Kyureghyan\u2019s lab will donate its proceeds from tool sales to CARGI scholarships at 51ÁÔÆæ to support student work and internships.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly 30 percent of worker injuries in the gas utility industry come from changing meters.
