These high schoolers shared their enthusiasm: \u201cEngineering rocks!\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Opportunity is the driving force that powers 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s pre-college programs and brings thousands of young people to campus.<\/p>\n<p>They come from grade schools to visit a university campus for the first time. They come from middle schools to sharpen their math skills. They come from high schools to prepare for careers as doctors, lawyers, engineers and architects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur priority is designing programs for students from low-income and underrepresented families,\u201d says April Holland, executive director of TRIO and Pre-college programs at 51ÁÔÆæ. Hear from current and former students and the program&#8217;s director.<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/d_h1GUHHfeU\">View full size on YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Federal TRIO programs such as Upward Bound and Talent Search join 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s State of Wisconsin funded efforts like Saturday Academy, ACT Prep Class, Planning for the Future, Future Success Program and Quest Project.<\/p>\n<p>They all share that critical exposure to a major university. \u201cMost of our students have never set foot on a college campus before. They attend classes in lecture halls and labs, have access to the library and 51ÁÔÆæ Union, and meet faculty, staff and college students,\u201d says Holland.<\/p>\n<p>While the university\u2019s pre-college programs can act as a pipeline drawing students to 51ÁÔÆæ, the main goal is for students to pursue postsecondary study.<\/p>\n<p>Gregory Ware, manager of the Mary Ryan Club of the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, says pre-college \u201ccontinues to give kids hope, even in these tough economic times,\u201d with coursework that \u201cgives students who go on to college a jump-start over those who didn\u2019t take advantage of pre-college.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>Holland says that 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s pre-college programs target young people who are \u201cfirst generation\u201d college students. \u201cWe work with many families where parents didn\u2019t attend college, don\u2019t understand the postsecondary process, and, in some cases, may not value higher education.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><strong>Encourage, inspire, empower, motivate<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_172\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-172\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2011\/08\/pre-college_talkshow.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-172\" title=\"pre-college_talkshow\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2011\/08\/pre-college_talkshow.jpg\" alt=\"Students worked in teams to produce their own talk shows\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-172\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">During the Mini-Courses Summer Exploration Camp second week\u2019s reading and writing component, students worked in teams to produce their own talk shows, which were professionally recorded in 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s studios.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Workshops and seminars for parents are important, but Holland also emphasizes the relationships her staff builds with families. \u201cWe build a climate of support for these students and their families as they strive to climb out of poverty and dependence,\u201d she says. \u201cWe encourage, we inspire, we empower and we motivate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s pre-college staff brings that message to the community, visiting the United Community Center, YMCAs and churches, getting the message out that college is attainable.<\/p>\n<p>Holland says this outreach has resonance with the community because it is \u201creality-based.\u201d Many pre-college staff members have had to overcome academic, racial, class and cultural barriers. Holland was the first in her own family to attend college. \u201cIn other words, we\u2019ve been there.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Back to \u2018home base\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_173\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-173\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2011\/08\/pre-college_holland.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-173\" title=\"April Holland\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2011\/08\/pre-college_holland.jpg\" alt=\"April Holland\" width=\"300\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-173\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">April Holland finds new \u201cfavorite spots\u201d on the 51ÁÔÆæ campus.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Holland\u2019s commitment and concern for \u201cher kids\u201d is apparent. Being hired to head 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s TRIO and Pre-college Programs in January reunites her with a campus that she describes as her professional (and personal) \u201chome base.\u201d Holland\u2019s career in higher education began at 51ÁÔÆæ in 1982. She served as the director of pre-college programs from 1991-2000, \u201cworking with some of the most dynamic people I\u2019ve ever been connected with.\u201d Other career experience includes administrative positions with a high school, private colleges and universities, and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Holland says this \u201cvery rich career history\u201d has influenced her approach to pre-college education. \u201cThese multiple perspectives help me focus on how to meet the needs of our students during very challenging economic times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ware agrees that Holland\u2019s extensive experience is invaluable. \u201cShe has the contacts to enhance 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s position with businesses, nonprofit organizations and state agencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Success stories<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Holland\u2019s return to 51ÁÔÆæ has reunited her with a number of pre-college \u201csuccess stories.\u201d Audia Young was one of the area high schoolers chosen for a two-year Scholars of Math, Technology and Foreign Language program that culminated in a four-week trip to China in July 1999. After graduating from Milwaukee\u2019s Rufus King High School, she attended Marquette University and earned a degree in computer science.<\/p>\n<p>Young has worked for GE Healthcare for the last seven years, and credits her many pre-college courses at 51ÁÔÆæ with helping her develop vital skills that carried her through university studies and a challenging career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pre-college staff members were very engaging and motivating,\u201d Young says. \u201cThey made sure that students stayed on time and on track.\u201d She values the emphasis on self-discipline. Young also describes the \u201csense of security\u201d she felt during her middle- and high-school experiences at 51ÁÔÆæ. \u201cI felt confident that I was gaining the skills that would ensure me success in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Holland encourages parents interested in enrolling children in pre-college to contact the office directly at 414-229-2845. Parents are mailed an information packet about programs and services that includes Holland\u2019s business card. \u201cParents can speak to me directly and I can refer them to program directors. We always welcome the opportunity to speak with parents, find out about their child\u2019s academic needs and direct them to the appropriate
