(<em>Photos by Michael Anderson.<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\u00a0students\u00a0had a chance to learn firsthand how the United States and Cuba could benefit from reestablishing diplomatic relations under policies recently\u00a0announced\u00a0by President Barack Obama.<\/p>\n<p>Over UWinteriM, 14 students traveled to Havana with adjunct professor Michael Martin of 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s School of Architecture and Urban Planning to learn about the city\u2019s sustainability efforts as well as its culture and history. This is Martin\u2019s third such trip, and it\u2019s usually difficult to organize given the United States\u2019 embargo and strained relationship with Cuba. That could change in the coming years, a prospect that Martin said seems welcome in Havana.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15671\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15671\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2015\/01\/Cuba_calle-21mbqpt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15671 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2015\/01\/Cuba_calle-21mbqpt.jpg\" alt=\"Cuba_calle\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15671\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students tour the streets of Old Havana to learn about Cuban architecture and restoration efforts.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhat was amazing was the lack of knowledge of what it all really meant \u2026 but you could feel in the atmosphere that there was a great, great warmth and (hope) that this would all be over someday,\u201d Martin said.<\/p>\n<p>Rebels supporting Fidel Castro overthrew the Cuban president in 1959 and instituted a communist dictatorship backed by the Soviet Union. In response, the U.S. imposed a trade embargo still in effect. When the Iron Curtain collapsed in 1989, so did Cuba\u2019s Soviet support. Gasoline imports dried up and with limited fuel, it became harder to transport crops from rural farms. To keep from starving, Cubans cultivated urban, organic farms.<\/p>\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ students visited some of these farms on their trip.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15674\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15674\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2015\/01\/Cuba_che-1bqbhyu.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15674 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2015\/01\/Cuba_che-1bqbhyu.jpg\" alt=\"Cuba_che\" width=\"300\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2015\/01\/Cuba_che-1bqbhyu.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2015\/01\/Cuba_che-1bqbhyu-230x300.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15674\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cuban citizens revere revolutionaries like Che Guevara.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve tried to integrate the idea of looking for what are known as organoponicos and the distribution of urban farm food networks,\u201d Martin said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got a map of them, and I go out and try to have students find them and take pictures, interview people about them, and come up with observations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students also toured portions of Old Havana, studying the architecture of the city\u2019s 500-year-old buildings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think, as Americans, we have this image of Cuba post-1959. To see the history of Havana going all the way back to the 1400s was interesting,\u201d Spanish major Olivia Davidson said. \u201cIt was beautiful.
