As the members of Team USA, they\u2019ve won awards worldwide, using their fine art degrees to sculpt in a cold and cantankerous medium.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been carving together since 1986,\u201d said Queoff, a Milwaukee-based sculptor who earned a master of fine arts degree in 1977. \u201cWe\u2019re like old musicians who just keep performing together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">With help from Martino (\u201978, BFA) and Sponholtz (\u201979, BFA), Queoff created the 6-by-12-foot bronze panther that stands in front of 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Enderis Hall. The sculpture, commissioned by the 51ÁÔÆæ Alumni Association, has become a beloved campus icon since it was unveiled in 2015 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the university\u2019s mascot.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_153154\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-153154\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-153154\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2026\/02\/snow250x300-627678673_1364331822405737_7759405810152623287_n.jpg\" alt=\"A snow sculpture shows three figures holding an Olympic torch and laurel wreath.\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-153154\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cZenith,\u201d depicting three figures holding an Olympic torch and laurel wreath, earned a bronze medal. (Submitted photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last week Team USA competed in the Olympic Art Festival\u2019s 2026 International Snow Sculpture Competition in San Candido, Italy, a mountain town about 25 miles from Cortina d\u2019Ampezzo, where the mountain events will be held at the 2026 Winter Olympics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The team was one of eight selected from more than 300 applicants worldwide. Their piece, \u201cZenith,\u201d depicting three figures holding an Olympic torch and laurel wreath, earned a bronze medal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019ve always treated snow as a serious artistic medium,\u201d said Sponholtz, a Mishicot-based sculptor who works primarily in wood. Martino, a La Crosse-based artist who sculpts in wood and bronze, agrees. \u201cWe share a love for creating beautiful forms and being out in nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The three friends have traveled thousands of miles to snow sculpture competitions from Canada to Japan, where they won a bronze medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics Art Festival near Nagano. Their luggage includes customized carving tools and a gridded plexiglass box containing a polyurethane scale model of their competition sculpture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt keeps us on the same page. An inch square on the model is a foot square in the snow,\u201d Queoff said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">They\u2019ve honed a system of defined roles. \u201cI\u2019ll be roughing in shapes on top of the block,\u201d Sponholtz said, \u201cand Tom will be working from the bottom. Mike will be clearing the snow. Once the form is roughed in, we all work to add the details.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>One more collaboration<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">After four decades and more than 250 snow sculptures, the members of Team USA will collaborate on their final piece together Feb. 14-15 at the Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, where they have created snow sculptures annually for 35 years. The museum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lywam.org\/exhibitions-archive\/captured-in-cold-photographs-from-35-years-of-team-usa-snow-sculpture\/\">featured a photo retrospective of their work<\/a> in January, \u201cCaptured in Cold: Photographs from 35 Years of Team USA Snow Sculpture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cA 10-by-10 block of snow is 17 tons,\u201d Sponholtz said. \u201cWe carve and clear all that by hand. We\u2019re all in pretty good shape, but we don\u2019t move like we used to. It\u2019s a great feeling when you\u2019re finished, but then you wake up hurting the next morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Time may be catching up with the members of Team USA, but as all snow sculptors know, time is never on your side when using a material that melts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSnow sculpture is like performance art,\u201d Martino said. \u201cIt\u2019s here and gone.
