{"id":151016,"date":"2025-11-13T10:37:02","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T16:37:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=151016"},"modified":"2025-11-13T10:37:02","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T16:37:02","slug":"former-u-n-leader-and-south-carolina-governor-david-beasley-to-visit-uwm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/former-u-n-leader-and-south-carolina-governor-david-beasley-to-visit-uwm\/","title":{"rendered":"Former U.N. leader and South Carolina governor David Beasley to visit 51ÁÔÆæ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Renowned humanitarian and former South Carolina governor David Beasley will reflect on his tenure with the United Nations World Food Programme during a conversation on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 3 p.m. in the 51ÁÔÆæ Student Union, Wisconsin Room.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chia Youyee Vang, 51ÁÔÆæ vice chancellor for community empowerment and institutional inclusivity and professor of history, will moderate the discussion, which will be followed by a reception at 4:30 p.m.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Beasley served as the executive director of the U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) for six years, until 2023. In that role, he led a global push to increase aid to fight hunger and starvation in people living in 80 nations. In<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> December 2020, Beasley accepted the Nobel Peace P<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rize on behalf of the WFP for its efforts to combat world hunger.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before he was appointed to the U.N. position, Beasley served one term as governor of South Carolina.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the discussion at 51ÁÔÆæ, Beasley will share insights into pressing issues facing the United States and the global community. During his time as the leader of the WFP, he and his team tackled a staggering increase in the number of people worldwide who were on the brink of starvation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThe world was making progress,\u201d Beasley said, ahead of his visit to 51ÁÔÆæ. \u201cThen COVID\u201019, supply\u2010chain shocks and war knocked that progress off its rails. We\u2019re no longer just trying to eliminate hunger \u2014 we\u2019re scrambling to keep famine from breaking out in multiple places.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Food insecurity in the United States has dominated news coverage recently, with disruption of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to politics.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cYou can&#8217;t fix hunger with politics; but you can fix it with people. When Americans show up for one another \u2014 being the hands and feet, loving our neighbors \u2014 we prove that compassion is stronger than division. That\u2019s how we end hunger here at home,\u201d Beasley said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cSNAP and food banks matter, but what matters even more is how we care for one another. Every American can be part of the solution \u2014 checking on a neighbor, volunteering, sharing what we have,\u201d he added.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span
