{"id":150103,"date":"2025-10-17T17:47:43","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T22:47:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=150103"},"modified":"2025-10-17T17:47:43","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T22:47:43","slug":"state-of-the-humanities-mke-panel-will-be-oct-30","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/state-of-the-humanities-mke-panel-will-be-oct-30\/","title":{"rendered":"State of the Humanities MKE panel will be Oct. 30"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Join the Center for 21st Century Studies (C21) at UW-Milwaukee on Oct. 30 for a panel discussion that explores how Milwaukeeans and MKE organizations might sustain, expand and care for the humanities across our city.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2024, the Consortium for Humanities Centers and Institutes\u2019 World Humanities Report warned of extinction risk to human knowledge. In the year that\u2019s passed since that report\u2019s publication, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting lost its federal funding, the National Endowment for the Humanities was radically restructured, causing state humanities agencies to lose funding to the point of near closure, and multiple U.S. universities have taken steps to shrink, pause or shutter humanities degree-granting programs.<\/p>\n<p>But the resilience of humanities practices and institutions in the face of so much uncertainty evinces their value, and merits further dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>The State of the Humanities MKE panel, moderated by C21 Director Jennifer Johung, invites four Milwaukee-based humanities advocates \u2014 Michael Carriere (MSOE), Art Derse (MCW), Jodi Eastberg (MIAD) and Maggie Nettesheim Hoffmann (Marquette) \u2014 to discuss:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What\u2019s important about the humanities in Milwaukee, especially in our current moment?<\/li>\n<li>What are we fighting to sustain, expand, or ideate?<\/li>\n<li>How can we care for the humanities in MKE? What does this look like?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After the panel, guests are invited to head upstairs to C21\u2019s headquarters for a reception and small breakout discussions about actionable steps everyone can take to make Milwaukee a haven for humanists.<\/p>\n<p>The event will be held 4-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at Room 175 Curtin Hall, 3243 N. Downer Ave.<\/p>\n<p>This event is free and open to the public. Space is limited.
