{"id":149339,"date":"2025-10-02T09:17:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T14:17:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=149339"},"modified":"2025-10-02T09:17:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T14:17:12","slug":"register-now-for-oct-17-renewing-our-civic-culture-lecture-and-dinner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/register-now-for-oct-17-renewing-our-civic-culture-lecture-and-dinner\/","title":{"rendered":"Register now for Oct. 17 &#8216;Renewing Our Civic Culture&#8217; lecture and dinner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All 51ÁÔÆæ faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the inaugural \u201cRenewing Our Civic Culture\u201d lecture and dinner on Friday, Oct. 17, from 4-7:30 p.m., in the 51ÁÔÆæ Student Union Ballroom.<\/p>\n<p>This event will feature a guest lecture by Jed Atkins, dean of the University of North Carolina\u2019s School of Civic Life and Leadership, followed by a meal with facilitated dialogue at each table. The dinner offers attendees opportunity to experience civil dialogue in real time while further engaging the speaker\u2019s ideas. <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.office.com\/r\/wret7YSwwC\">Use this online form to register<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Atkins\u2019 talk, \u201cThe Virtues of Civil Discourse,\u201d will address how civic discourse can be taught and practiced on campus, equipping all of us to better bridge divides and live as members of a pluralistic democracy. This free event is open to the public and made possible by a grant from the Tommy G. Thompson Center for Public Leadership. It is hosted by 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Division of Community Empowerment &amp; Institutional Inclusivity, in collaboration with the Division of Student Affairs, Honors College, Department of Philosophy, Department of Political Science and Classics Program.
