As teaching faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and co-founder of its <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/informationstudies\/research\/groups-centers\/disruptive-technologies-lab\/\">Disruptive Technologies Lab<\/a>, Friedel\u2019s work bridges academia and industry, empowering students and local technology startups to thrive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would describe myself as three things: educator, entrepreneur and investor,\u201d Friedel said. \u201cMy job is to help people become who they\u2019re going to become.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Bridging academic and industry<\/h2>\n<p>Friedel began his career in engineering, with degrees from 51ÁÔÆæ and Marquette University. But after working for industry giants like Harley-Davison, his entrepreneurial instincts led him to angel investing and teaching. He found his passion for helping startups and students succeed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was fortunate to have really great mentors,\u201d Friedel said. \u201cThat\u2019s what motivates me \u2014 helping people along the way, because a lot of people helped me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, Friedel is the executive vice president of <a href=\"https:\/\/milwaukeevp.com\/\">Milwaukee Venture Partners<\/a>, an angel network that supports local startups with funding and mentorship, which he co-founded in 2021. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about the funds. It\u2019s about the network and experience we provide,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s what gets me excited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The many hats Friedel wears feed directly into his classroom at 51ÁÔÆæ. \u201cThere\u2019s a concept in entrepreneurship called \u2018getting out of the building,\u2019\u201d he explained. \u201cI go out and talk to industry partners and bring the latest back to my students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The habit has paid off. Friedel launched a graduate-level course on artificial intelligence and blockchain \u2014\u202fsix years ago. \u201cBefore it was cool,\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n<h2>Helping students and the region thrive<\/h2>\n<p>For Friedel, the most rewarding moments come from seeing his students succeed. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about teaching them Python or MySQL,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s about helping them develop soft skills, like working with teams and building their personal brands \u2014\u202fand seeing them get that first internship or first job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Friedel\u2019s work is also helping to position Milwaukee as a hub for technology and entrepreneurship. Through initiatives like Milwaukee Venture Partners and the Disruptive Technologies Lab, he\u2019s contributing to the city\u2019s growing community of tech startups. Just 10 years ago, he says, Milwaukee wasn\u2019t seen as a great place for startups.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s changed. Startups in the Milwaukee area attracted more investment from venture capitalists in 2021 and 2022 than in any of the previous seven years. As of 2024, more than 250 VC-backed startups had been created in the area, together raising over $700 million in investments and employing more than 4,100 people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we don\u2019t innovate, we\u2019ll get left behind,\u201d Friedel said. \u201cWe have to evolve, and it\u2019s going to mean more prosperity and more growth for everybody here.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>A vision for AI\u2019s future<\/h2>\n<p>Artificial intelligence plays a major role in Friedel\u2019s work as educator and investor. He points to applications like cancer diagnosis tools that use machine learning to improve speed and accuracy. Looking ahead, Friedel\u2019s aspirations include writing a book on entrepreneurship in AI and blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe once had people setting up bowling pins and cutting ice, and working as telephone <span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW93331077 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW93331077 BCX0\">operators \u2014 those jobs don\u2019t exist today, but new jobs have come into their place,&#8221; he<\/span><\/span> said. \u201cMy philosophy is that it\u2019s going to be the same thing
