Focusing the camera on marginalized individuals and communities, Rosenberg seeks compelling human stories, especially among those often overlooked.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out, he\u2019s got a pretty good one himself.<\/p>\n<p>Rosenberg has been a part of two Academy Award wins. The executive vice president of production at Breakwater Studios helped make \u201cThe Queen of Basketball\u201d and \u201cThe Last Repair Shop,\u201d both of which triumphed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/documentary-produced-by-uwm-alum-wins-academy-award\/\">Best Documentary Short Film<\/a> category in 2022 and 2024, respectively. A 2006 broadcast journalism graduate, Rosenberg is one of only two University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee alums to win an Oscar.<\/p>\n<p>At Breakwater, Rosenberg has worked with founder and CEO Ben Proudfoot to develop the studio\u2019s approach to telling stories of people who didn\u2019t receive the recognition they deserved, often because of marginalization and injustice. He\u2019s also helped hone its distinctive style \u2014 intimate, empathic and cinematic, with long interviews and a direct-to-camera filming technique.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour most important asset is your story,\u201d Rosenberg said. \u201cI always try to find the human angle in stories that haven\u2019t gotten their due.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Developing a love of storytelling<\/h2>\n<p>Born and raised in Green Bay, Rosenberg enrolled at 51ÁÔÆæ in 2002 hoping to pursue <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/journalism-advertising-media-studies\/\">video production and broadcast journalism<\/a>. As an undergraduate student, he ran the student newscast PantherVision and interned at public radio station W51ÁÔÆæ, experiences that <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/in-focus-2022\/journalism-alum-would-like-to-thank-the-academy-and-uwm\/\">nurtured his love of narrative storytelling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After graduating, Rosenberg self-financed an independent film, then moved to Chicago for a job in TV production. In 2016, he relocated to Los Angeles to work as a line producer for Oprah Winfrey, shooting celebrities from Steven Spielberg and Beyonc\u00e9 to Michelle and Barack Obama. Two years later, Rosenberg joined Breakwater to lead production of its humanist, short-form documentaries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the work we&#8217;re doing is vital,\u201d he said. \u201cWe&#8217;re telling stories that need to be told.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Amplifying voices and feeling fulfilled<\/h2>\n<p>When Rosenberg first learned about Lusia \u201cLucy\u201d Harris, he couldn\u2019t believe he\u2019d never heard of her before. That made her story \u2014 rising from rural, segregated Mississippi to become the trailblazing <a href=\"https:\/\/breakwaterstudios.com\/film\/the-queen-of-basketball\/\">\u201cQueen of Basketball\u201d<\/a> \u2014 a perfect one to tell. In the film, Harris looks back on her life with a wistful reflection that adds richness to her story. It\u2019s especially poignant as Harris died just before the documentary\u2019s Oscar nomination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully, for the rest of time, if you Google her name, our film will come up and you can see her impact and hear her story in her own words,\u201d Rosenberg said. \u201cThat\u2019s the thing I\u2019m proudest of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/breakwaterstudios.com\/film\/the-queen-of-basketball\/\">\u201cThe Last Repair Shop,\u201d<\/a> the focus is on four talented craftspeople who have devoted their lives \u2014 broken and repaired in different ways \u2014 to maintaining 80,000 musical instruments for students in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was so exciting is those repair people never in a million years (would have) thought they would be on the red carpet at the Academy Awards,\u201d Rosenberg said. \u201cWhen you\u2019re able to shine the spotlight on somebody who never expected it, that\u2019s such a wonderful moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Inspiring audiences with accessible stories<\/h2>\n<p>Rosenberg sees the short documentary format as ideal for modern audiences who are increasingly drawn toward easily digestible content.<\/p>\n<p>These stories can provide a platform for diverse perspectives, highlight real-life experiences, and foster understanding through authentic narratives, Rosenberg said. And to ensure they\u2019re accessible to everyone, Breakwater makes its documentaries <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@BreakwaterStudios\">free to watch on YouTube<\/a>, where they\u2019ve attracted millions of views.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything we do, we\u2019re trying to make our audience\u2019s day better,\u201d Rosenberg said. \u201cThe No. 1 audience member for all our work is our storyteller, but we also want to produce uplifting films that can make the challenges of your day seem a little less heavy.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Josh Rosenberg fell in love with storytelling at 51ÁÔÆæ.
