{"id":141546,"date":"2025-02-03T16:17:26","date_gmt":"2025-02-03T22:17:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=141546"},"modified":"2025-02-12T13:53:14","modified_gmt":"2025-02-12T19:53:14","slug":"m-cubed-celebrates-a-successful-first-decade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/m-cubed-celebrates-a-successful-first-decade\/","title":{"rendered":"M-Cubed celebrates a successful first decade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">A decade ago, three leaders of Milwaukee\u2019s largest public educational institutions joined forces to improve graduation rates and provide talent that would fill job openings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Thursday, representatives from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee Area Technical College and Milwaukee Public Schools <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs58.com\/news\/m-event-celebrates-10-years-of-partnership-in-local-education\">gathered to celebrate the success<\/a> of M<sup>3<\/sup>, a joint initiative of the three institutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cM-Cubed started out as a dream shared by Vicki Martin, MATC\u2019s president at the time, and former MPS Superintendent Darienne Driver and myself,\u201d 51ÁÔÆæ Chancellor Mark Mone said at the celebration at MATC\u2019s campus. \u201cWe began this partnership to help students progress from high school to college to the workforce more efficiently.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141547\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141547\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-141547\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2025\/01\/mcubed300x200untitled-0737.jpg\" alt=\"A high school student with a microphone in his hand sits at a table.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-141547\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MATC student Victor Lo tells the gathering how M-Cubed helped him. (MATC photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">More than 150 people turned out for the event, which featured remarks from Mone, MATC President Anthony Cruz and MPS Interim Superintendent Eduardo Galvan, as well as a panel of students of each of the institutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The students spoke of how they personally benefited from many of the M<sup>3 <\/sup>programs, from gaining confidence and college credits through dual enrollment to establishing study skills through the transition programs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">M<sup>3 <\/sup>has created several programs to drive student success:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Smart Start<\/strong> helps ease the transition for students graduating from high school and preparing to enter college by offering support through applications, registering for classes, summer programs and the first year of higher education.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Direct Admit<\/strong> streamlines the MATC and 51ÁÔÆæ college application process by providing one form that is free and takes only five minutes for MPS juniors to complete.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Work-Based Learning<\/strong> provides students with real-world experiences through job fairs, internships and job shadowing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>College Connections<\/strong> is a dual enrollment program in which MPS seniors can earn college credits during their final year of high school.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Milwaukee Parent Institute<\/strong> equips MPS families with the knowledge and skills to help their students graduate and prepare for higher education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The results of students participating in these programs have been impressive, officials said.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>900 MPS juniors in the class of 2025 submitted streamlined college applications through Milwaukee Direct Admit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>Since 2019, more than 700 MPS seniors have earned 8,000 college credits from 51ÁÔÆæ and MATC through the College Connections initiative, saving nearly $2.6 million in tuition.<\/li>\n<li>Since 2018, 5,000 MPS students have participated in work-based learning and job fairs to explore careers.<\/li>\n<li>10,000 freshmen and sophomores have toured MATC and 51ÁÔÆæ campuses since 2017.<\/li>\n<li>More than 61% of MPS seniors in the class of 2024 completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), surpassing both the national (54%) and Wisconsin (47%) averages and unlocking greater access to college.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jesus Ruiz Villamil, a native of Colombia who graduated from MPS\u2019 South Division High School in 2024, earned 25 credits through the M<sup>3<\/sup> College Connections dual enrollment program, visited campuses and also engaged in the Smart Start program. Today, he is studying linguistics at 51ÁÔÆæ.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBeing able to visit campuses allowed me to visualize myself in college,\u201d he said. \u201cSmart Start answered a lot of my questions, and I started college on the right foot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Samia Bell, a senior at MPS\u2019 Vincent High School, feels only excitement about her educational future. Through M<sup>3<\/sup>, she has taken college classes, visited college campuses and learned about financial aid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">By the time she graduates this spring, Bell will have earned 22 college credits.
