{"id":139728,"date":"2024-11-22T13:33:29","date_gmt":"2024-11-22T19:33:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=139728"},"modified":"2024-12-03T09:58:01","modified_gmt":"2024-12-03T15:58:01","slug":"neeskay-heads-north-for-five-year-maintenance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/neeskay-heads-north-for-five-year-maintenance\/","title":{"rendered":"Neeskay heads north for five-year maintenance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Neeskay, the 51ÁÔÆæ School of Freshwater Sciences\u2019 research vessel, is on some unfamiliar ground: Land.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 71-year-old ship is up in Manitowoc at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burgerboat.com\/\">Burger Boat Company<\/a>, where it is undergoing its regular five-year maintenance. Over the course of four to six weeks, <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/research\/fleet-and-facilities\/fleet-research-vessels\/neeskay\/\">the Neeskay<\/a> will undergo maintenance that includes:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>Hull thickness survey and fresh paint.<\/li>\n<li>Thru-hull valves service.<\/li>\n<li>Prop and shaft inspection and realignment.<\/li>\n<li>Rudder and steering inspection and maintenance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Captain Max Morgan sailed the Neeskay to Manitowoc through choppy seas on Lake Michigan Oct. 16, navigating a short way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Burger+Boat+Company\/@44.0980379,-87.6896462,13.59z\/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x880337ca7c69eda5:0x61a16277885e6221!8m2!3d44.09862!4d-87.6713205!16s%2Fg%2F1tkc2p32?entry=ttu&amp;g_ep=EgoyMDI0MTExOC4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D\">up the Manitowoc River to Burger Boat<\/a>. There, a large travel lift hauled the Neeskay \u2013 all 71 feet and 75 tons of it \u2013 out of the water and onto a dry dock.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Built in 1953 in New Orleans, the Neeskay was an Army T-boat used for tug and transport duties in the Korean War. 51ÁÔÆæ bought it in 1970 and had it converted into a research vessel at Peterson Builders in Sturgeon Bay. It remains the only research vessel that explores the Great Lakes year-round.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">51ÁÔÆæ has been raising money to replace the Neeskay with a modern vessel. Recent donations <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/1-3-million-gift-moves-uwm-closer-to-new-research-vessel\/\">have moved the effort to within $3.5 million<\/a> of the $20 million cost needed to start construction on the Maggi Sue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">At 200 tons and 120 feet long, <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/research\/fleet-and-facilities\/fleet-research-vessels\/maggi-sue\/\">the Maggi Sue will be much larger<\/a> than the Neeskay. It will be packed with state-of-the-art equipment, making it the nation\u2019s most technologically advanced freshwater research vessel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The
