  {"id":131969,"date":"2024-04-11T11:31:45","date_gmt":"2024-04-11T16:31:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=131969"},"modified":"2024-04-18T13:30:09","modified_gmt":"2024-04-18T18:30:09","slug":"uwm-grad-student-chosen-for-national-teachers-hall-of-fame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwm-grad-student-chosen-for-national-teachers-hall-of-fame\/","title":{"rendered":"51ÁÔÆæ grad student chosen for National Teachers Hall of Fame"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shelly Moore Krajacic wants to share her enthusiasm for teaching with everyone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite the challenges and recent criticism of teachers, she said, \u201cTeaching is the single greatest profession there is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Krajacic, a South Milwaukee High School teacher, who is also a graduate student in the Urban Education Doctoral program at 51ÁÔÆæ, was one of two Wisconsin teachers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NationalTeachersHallofFame\/posts\/pfbid036kdxH3hh7q1d1zN9X7dybtPDFh8uYjGFEDmNboeLVGWrFCxWXTMYqYnocUDzYnb5l\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chosen for the National Teachers Hall of Fame<\/a> recently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The teacher organization\u2019s focus is on drawing public attention to exceptional career teachers through a recognition program that honors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nthf.org\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">five outstanding teachers nationally<\/a> every year.<\/p>\n<h3>Always wanted to teach<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Krajacic knew she wanted to be a teacher from her earliest years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBoth of my parents are teachers and I have one grandparent on each side of the family who\u2019s a teacher, so it\u2019s the family business,\u201d she said. Krajacic grew up practicing her own teaching skills on her little brother and stuffed animals, she recalled.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">While she briefly considered law school, her undergraduate experiences in observing and visiting classrooms cemented her choice. \u201cOnce you try it, you know. I think it\u2019s where I was meant to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">She has been a teacher for more than 25 years, starting out teaching drama at Ellsworth High School in northwestern Wisconsin in 1998. She has taught junior and senior English at South Milwaukee for the past three years. The school surprised her with a ceremony on March 21 when the national honor was announced.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Krajacic earned her B.S. in education in English, political science and theater from the University of Wisconsin-Steven&#8217;s Point and her master\u2019s degree in English Education from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.<\/p>\n<h3>Looking for a challenge<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">She decided to start the doctoral program at 51ÁÔÆæ shortly after the birth of her daughter in October 2018 when she was taking some time off from teaching.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m always looking for the next challenge,\u201d she said. While most of her career had been spent in rural schools, she added, \u201cI wanted to learn something new.\u201d She chose <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/education\/academics\/urban-education-doctoral-program\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s urban education doctoral program<\/a> after researching the program and the professors leading it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTheir passion for education showed me this was definitely where I wanted to go.\u201d She credits her doctoral advisor, Candance Doerr-Stevens, associate professor of teaching and learning, with being a major influence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">At this point, Krajacic is getting the preliminary approval she needs for her doctoral thesis, and hopes to finish her doctorate by December 2025.<\/p>\n<h3>Thesis grew from experience<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her thesis will focus on anti-racist education of incoming English language arts teachers \u2013 the extent to which they view themselves as anti-racist educators and what they think that is.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">That interest grew out of two of her own experiences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0One was the literature she taught in her advanced placement English class. \u201cYou find a lot of history entrenched in what was recognized as (being) of value.\u201d She wondered why certain books were chosen and not others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The other reason grew out of an experience early in her career as teacher in a small rural school district. A student asked her about the religion of Black Americans in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHe was authentically confused. We talk about teaching of different values and cultures in urban places, but there\u2019s a deep need for that understanding everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Supporter of teachers<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Doerr-Stevens said that Krajacic is a strong supporter of teachers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cShelly Krajacic\u2019s sharp eye for policy trends within education and commitment to the field overall make her a strong voice of support for teachers in both urban and rural contexts,\u201d Doerr-Stevens said. \u201cI look forward to seeing her research continue to support equitable teaching practices and policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Krajacic was nominated for the award by colleagues at South Milwaukee and former superintendent Jeff Weiss. It\u2019s a really great district, and she really enjoys teaching there, Krajacic said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">While she always has a plan for her classes, the students keep the work interesting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI like that it\u2019s different every day.
