{"id":124455,"date":"2023-09-08T11:50:01","date_gmt":"2023-09-08T16:50:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=124455"},"modified":"2023-09-26T06:16:29","modified_gmt":"2023-09-26T11:16:29","slug":"together-we-can-safety-events-focus-on-prevention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/together-we-can-safety-events-focus-on-prevention\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Together We Can\u2019: Safety events focus on prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you need to know to stay safe on campus and in the surrounding areas?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 51ÁÔÆæ Police Department is holding its annual Safety Days on Sept. 12 (Milwaukee campus), Sept 13 (Waukesha campus) and Sept. 14 (Washington County campus).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The theme of this year\u2019s Safety Day is \u201cTogether We Can.\u201d The focus is on preventing overdoses, deterring crime and being prepared.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to Safety Day, a number of safety events are scheduled for the week of Sept. 25-29.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the details for Campus Safety Days:<\/p>\n<h3>Milwaukee campus<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuesday, Sept. 12, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Spaights Plaza (in case of inclement weather, tables will be located under the Golda Meir Library overhang and in the Student Union concourse)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 51ÁÔÆæ Police Department will have several display tables. One will be focused on drug and alcohol awareness and on overdose prevention, including information on Narcan boxes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another table will focus on deterring crime, including safety tips and details on how to use the free <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/police\/services\/uwm-emergency-alerts\/rave-guardian\/\">Rave Guardian<\/a> app, which provides alerts, a virtual personal safety escort and other crime prevention resources, as well as info on the blue light system and Virtual Safe, an encryption service.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A third table will give the campus community the opportunity to sign up for the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/police\/resources\/department-resources\/citizens-academy-training\/\">Citizens Academy<\/a> and auto theft device registration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event will feature giveaway items for visitors and a chance to meet campus police officers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, campus partners will be providing information and resources on a variety of health and wellness topics. The Milwaukee Fire Department will also be present at the Sept. 12 event.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safety Day on the Waukesha campus will be Sept. 13, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the main lobby area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safety Day on the Washington County\/West Bend campus will be Sept. 14, 11:30 a.m.- 1 p.m., in the gymnasium.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For both of these events, the 51ÁÔÆæ Police Department will have tables similar to those listed for the Milwaukee campus.<\/p>\n<h3>Safety Week<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campus Safety Week Sept. 25-29 will include a variety of additional events on the Milwaukee campus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Monday, Sept. 25<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/safetytraining\/\">Classroom and campus safety training<\/a> (faculty and instructional staff only), 1-2:30 p.m., Student Union 240<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safe Night Out event, 7-9 p.m., Cambridge Commons<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Tuesday Sept. 26<\/strong>: Self-defense training, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Zelazo, Room 171<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Wednesday, Sept. 27<\/strong>: CPR\/AED\/Narcan training, 6-8:30 p.m., Zelazo 171<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol and other drug awareness tabling event, 7-9 p.m., Sandburg Hall Commons<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Thursday, Sept. 28<\/strong>: Civilian response to active shooter event, 4:30-6 p.m., Chapman Hall, Room
