{"id":123613,"date":"2023-08-16T10:00:57","date_gmt":"2023-08-16T15:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=123613"},"modified":"2024-09-10T10:36:52","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T15:36:52","slug":"freshwater-collaborative-awards-uwm-nearly-1-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/freshwater-collaborative-awards-uwm-nearly-1-million\/","title":{"rendered":"Freshwater Collaborative awards 51ÁÔÆæ nearly $1 million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Freshwater Collaborative of Wisconsin has awarded to 51ÁÔÆæ nearly $1 million in funding for seven projects that will increase research and training opportunities for high school and undergraduate students and will address Wisconsin\u2019s biggest water challenges, including contaminants such as PFAS \u2013 perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The collaborative\u2019s grants to 51ÁÔÆæ, totaling $994,281, are part of $4.3 million in grants the organization has meted out to UW System universities statewide to fund 22 inter-campus projects for the 2024-25 fiscal years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-123614 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2023\/08\/MicrosoftTeams-image-2.png\" alt=\"Freshwater Collaborative of Wisconsin logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>The programs will expand summer research programs that allow students to conduct freshwater research at one of the UW System campuses; offer summer programs for high school students to educate them about careers in the water industry; and further university-led research that helps fulfill community and government agency needs for water quality monitoring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three 51ÁÔÆæ-led projects will address PFAS. These \u201cforever chemicals,\u201d which are used in common products, have been found in high levels in drinking water throughout the state and are linked to significant health issues in humans. Another is related to workforce development in aquaculture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe most exciting thing about this latest round of funding is seeing how programs are becoming more interconnected,\u201d said Marissa Jablonski, executive director for the Freshwater Collaborative of Wisconsin. \u201cWe can really see how these connections are building a pipeline from college recruitment to jobs in freshwater in Wisconsin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Freshwater Collaborative is a statewide initiative, backed by the Wisconsin Legislature, to support curriculum development, career development and field training experiences for students interested in studying water-related fields at the 13 universities in the UW System.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">51ÁÔÆæ faculty leading these projects include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Melissa Scanlan, director of the Center for Water Policy<\/li>\n<li>Yin Wang, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering<\/li>\n<li>Shangping Xu, associate professor of geosciences<\/li>\n<li>Dong-Fang Deng, professor of freshwater sciences<\/li>\n<li>Laodong Guo, professor of freshwater
