{"id":123116,"date":"2023-07-25T12:36:15","date_gmt":"2023-07-25T17:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=123116"},"modified":"2023-07-28T09:38:01","modified_gmt":"2023-07-28T14:38:01","slug":"uwm-alum-stars-as-philippines-shock-new-zealand-in-world-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwm-alum-stars-as-philippines-shock-new-zealand-in-world-cup\/","title":{"rendered":"51ÁÔÆæ alum stars as Philippines shock New Zealand in World Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">51ÁÔÆæ alum Olivia McDaniel is not done making history.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">First, she and her sister, fellow 51ÁÔÆæ graduate Chandler McDaniel, helped the Philippines national women\u2019s soccer team <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/two-uwm-alums-making-history-in-the-world-cup\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">qualify for the World Cup<\/a> for the first time ever.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">And now, Olivia McDaniel was the star of the team\u2019s first-ever World Cup victory, as the Philippines shocked co-host New Zealand with a 1-0 victory on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">McDaniel secured the win in extra time, making a spectacular save on a shot that would have tied it up with less than three minutes remaining. It was, her <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/philippines-new-zealand-womens-world-cup-americans-olivia-mcdaniel-sarina-bolden-101634709.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coach Alen Stajcic said<\/a>, \u201cthe save of her life.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">WHAT A MASSIVE SAVE FROM MCDANIEL ??? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/T3bQCad8pf\">pic.twitter.com\/T3bQCad8pf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FOXSoccer\/status\/1683740340610539520?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 25, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was one of several saves in her star-making performance, one that earned McDaniel player of the game honors, the first time that award has been given to a goalkeeper at this World Cup.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt feels amazing, and hopefully this isn\u2019t the last accolade we achieve,\u201d McDaniel said after the match, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/asifburhan\/2023\/07\/25\/womens-world-cup-debutants-philippines-stun-co-hosts-new-zealand\/?sh=516183273a11\">according to Forbes<\/a>. \u201cThis is a team win, this isn\u2019t just me. This isn&#8217;t just what I&#8217;ve done. This is what the team\u2019s done, this is what the coaching staff&#8217;s done, what everyone behind the scenes has done. We\u2019ve put in our work, and we\u2019ve come out on top because of it. A win over Norway on Sunday would advance the Philippines to the round of 16, which would be a stunning achievement for a first-time World Cup qualifier.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Philippines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/stories\/soccer\/womens-world-cup-group-scenarios-how-each-team-advances-to-round-of-16\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">also could advance<\/a> with a draw vs. Norway, but only if Switzerland also beats New Zealand. That would put the Philippines in second place in Group A, and the top two teams from each pool move on.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QQd7MVPq8_Y\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Olivia played goal for 51ÁÔÆæ from 2016 to 2019, part of a very successful four-year stretch in which the team went 62-9-8 overall. Chandler transferred to Milwaukee after two years at Virginia Tech and started all 19 games in 2018, finishing the season with one goal and two assists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Both graduated from 51ÁÔÆæ in spring 2020, Olivia with a bachelor\u2019s degree in communication and Chandler with a bachelor\u2019s degree in criminal justice and a minor in psychology.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">They are part of a large contingent of Americans on the Philippines team. They are eligible to represent the Philippines because of their heritage \u2013 their mother, Lindy, is Filipino.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Holding the Player of the Match trophy, McDaniel was asked what it means to her to have made such a huge impact on such an important match.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis is what I\u2019ve been dreaming about since I was a kid,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifa.com\/fifaplus\/en\/watch\/6TzXD7a8EoBy8k5MwcsCx4\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">McDaniel said<\/a>. \u201cJust being here and being able to play with such elite players and against such amazing talent like New Zealand has. They gave it their all and it\u2019s amazing to know that we came out on top. We put in our work to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Philippines-Norway match is at 2 a.m. Milwaukee time on Sunday.
