  {"id":121520,"date":"2023-05-25T14:01:13","date_gmt":"2023-05-25T19:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=121520"},"modified":"2023-05-30T09:41:07","modified_gmt":"2023-05-30T14:41:07","slug":"carmen-students-celebrate-senior-signing-day-at-uwm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/carmen-students-celebrate-senior-signing-day-at-uwm\/","title":{"rendered":"Carmen students celebrate senior signing day at 51ÁÔÆæ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hundreds of students, family members and staff from the Carmen Schools of Science and Technology celebrated the schools\u2019 second annual Senior Signing Day at 51ÁÔÆæ.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">From the thunderous opening of the drumline to the final wrap-up, the event May 19 at the Klotsche Center gave Carmen seniors a chance to share their plans and celebrate their futures. Younger students had the opportunity to see what is possible for them. Faculty, staff and families joined the event to applaud student accomplishments and to honor outstanding teachers and staff. The celebration included high energy cheering, musical performances, scholarship and honors announcements, and words of encouragement from seniors and alumni.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The seniors attend Carmen\u2019s three high schools located across Milwaukee, which includes Carmen Northwest High School, Carmen South High School and Carmen Southeast High School.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alberto Maldonado, director of the Roberto Hernandez Center and a member of Carmen\u2019s board of directors, invited the students to last year\u2019s first-ever signing day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">51ÁÔÆæ Chancellor Mark Mone welcomed the 200 students, staff and families to campus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The event honored seniors who have chosen to move on to a variety of colleges and universities, the military, public service and careers in business and industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ninety percent of the more than 2,000 students Carmen\u2019s schools serve come from families with low incomes and who live in some of Milwaukee\u2019s most challenged neighborhoods, according to the schools. Carmen students graduate with some of the highest ACT scores among public schools in the city. In 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/best-high-schools\/wisconsin\/districts\/milwaukee-school-district\/carmen-high-school-of-science-and-technology-21769\">Carmen was named<\/a> to the U.S. News and World Report\u2019s national list of best high schools, ranking first in Milwaukee and 10<sup>th<\/sup> in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year\u2019s seniors have overcome the extraordinary challenge of a global pandemic during their high school careers, said Jennifer Lopez, Carmen chief executive officer. \u00a0\u201cIn a time of uncertainty and anxiety, they rose to the challenge.
