These <span class=\"mark612bbxkro\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">nurse<\/span>s are in short supply both in the state and nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>The new <span class=\"markhii8bkfhg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">51ÁÔÆæ<\/span> <span class=\"marksgb42jg9e\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">program<\/span> is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department <span class=\"markv0sshuz4k\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">of<\/span> Health and Human Services. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/2q8jth\/atfhg8b\/2mxcxu\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"4\"><span class=\"marktgryzhe7a\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Sexual<\/span> <span class=\"mark99c2z83f8\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">assault<\/span> <span class=\"mark612bbxkro\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">nurse<\/span> <span class=\"markcbnvn50qf\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">examiners<\/span><\/a> are highly qualified <span class=\"mark612bbxkro\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">nurse<\/span>s with specialized <span class=\"mark9s5akh0w8\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">training<\/span> and education who work with those who have experienced <span class=\"marktgryzhe7a\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">sexual<\/span> <span class=\"mark99c2z83f8\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">assault<\/span>, incest or abuse.<\/p>\n<p>In addition <span class=\"markzcljmpq52\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span> increasing the numbers <span class=\"markv0sshuz4k\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">of<\/span> certified <span class=\"mark612bbxkro\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">nurse<\/span> <span class=\"markcbnvn50qf\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">examiners<\/span> in Wisconsin, the <span class=\"markhii8bkfhg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">51ÁÔÆæ<\/span> project is focused on preparing these <span class=\"mark612bbxkro\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">nurse<\/span>s in culturally responsive care, according <span class=\"markzcljmpq52\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span> Penninah Kako, project director and principal investigator for the <span class=\"markhii8bkfhg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">51ÁÔÆæ<\/span>project. She is an associate professor in the College <span class=\"markv0sshuz4k\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">of<\/span> Nursing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, Black and Indigenous women suffer the most,\u201d experiencing <span class=\"marktgryzhe7a\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">sexual<\/span><span class=\"mark99c2z83f8\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">assault<\/span> at disproportionately higher rates compared <span class=\"markzcljmpq52\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span> their white counterparts, Kako said. LGBTQIA+ people are also among those who are disproportionately impacted, she added.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Currently in Wisconsin there are approximately 370 nurses who are trained to be adult\/adolescent sexual assault nurse examiners. Of those trained, fewer than 100 are certified through the International Association of Forensic Nurses, and only a small number come from Black, Indigenous and other marginalized populations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis <span class=\"markhii8bkfhg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">51ÁÔÆæ<\/span> <span class=\"marksgb42jg9e\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">program<\/span> was created with expertise <span class=\"markv0sshuz4k\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">of<\/span> three practicing <span class=\"marktgryzhe7a\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">sexual<\/span> <span class=\"mark99c2z83f8\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">assault <\/span><span class=\"mark612bbxkro\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">nurse<\/span> <span class=\"markcbnvn50qf\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">examiners<\/span> <span class=\"markzcljmpq52\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span> provide trauma-informed, culturally relevant and sensitive care <span class=\"markzcljmpq52\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>these populations,\u201d Kako said.<\/p>\n<p>Several partners in urban and rural Wisconsin are working with the project team <span class=\"markzcljmpq52\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>help meet the needs <span class=\"markv0sshuz4k\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">of<\/span> Black, Indigenous and other marginalized populations.<\/p>\n<p>The <span class=\"marksgb42jg9e\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">program<\/span> will also include mentoring, which is vital, according <span class=\"markzcljmpq52\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span> Kako, because the challenging work can lead <span class=\"markzcljmpq52\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span> burnout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really hard work <span class=\"markzcljmpq52\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span> provide care for traumatized survivors,\u201d Kako said. \u201c<span class=\"mark612bbxkro\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Nurse<\/span>s are trained, they come in, but then they leave. The attrition is high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first group <span class=\"markv0sshuz4k\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">of<\/span> <span class=\"mark612bbxkro\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">nurse<\/span>s starting the <span class=\"marksgb42jg9e\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">program<\/span> will go through the 12 online modules in about two months, including a day <span class=\"markv0sshuz4k\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">of<\/span> clinical lab experiences at <span class=\"markhii8bkfhg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">51ÁÔÆæ<\/span>\u2019s nursing simulation centers. The goal, said Kako, is <span class=\"markzcljmpq52\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span> prepare 10 <span class=\"mark612bbxkro\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">nurse<\/span>s first year and grow that <span class=\"markzcljmpq52\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span> 40 <span class=\"mark612bbxkro\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">nurse<\/span>s by the end <span class=\"markv0sshuz4k\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">of<\/span> second year.
