The search for solutions also creates opportunities for collaboration between higher education institutions, government entities and private companies to advance research and address workforce needs.<\/p>\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ, in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roc-taiwan.org\/uschi_en\/index.html\">Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago<\/a>, hosted the Taiwan-U.S. Business Forum in the Midwest on Monday to discuss these issues and others related to energy infrastructure and climate change.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_114386\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-114386\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-114386\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2022\/11\/Taiwan_forum_300x200.jpg\" alt=\"A woman speaks at a lectern in a ballroom\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-114386\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Taiwan-U.S. Business Forum in the Midwest brought together legislators from Wisconsin and Illinois, policymakers, industry leaders and academic researchers. (51ÁÔÆæ Photo\/Troye Fox)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Panelists at <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/taiwan-u-s-business-forum-at-uwm-to-look-at-energy-infrastructure-challenges-amid-climate-change\/\">the event in the 51ÁÔÆæ Student Union ballroom<\/a> included legislators from Wisconsin and Illinois, policymakers, industry leaders and academic researchers.<\/p>\n<p>The forum provided a venue to discuss potential solutions to challenges in areas like energy production, distribution, usage and storage in light of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The conversations are \u201cvery timely given that Taiwan and the U.S. have declared very ambitious plans to reduce emissions,\u201d said Johnson Chiang, director general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office of Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Chiang noted that Taiwan is targeting 2030 as a goal to switch all government vehicles and urban buses to electric. President Biden also is aiming for 2030, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/biden-set-target-50-evs-by-2030-industry-backs-goal-2021-08-05\/\">with a plan<\/a> for electric vehicles to make up half of all vehicles sold in the U.S. by then.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means we need a lot of energy infrastructure, not only with charging stations, but also with the ecosystem of EV-related businesses,\u201d Chiang said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/diversity-equity-inclusion\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/283\/2022\/11\/Taiwan-US-Business-Forum-Program.pdf\">Speakers at the forum included<\/a> leaders of Taiwanese companies based in the Midwest. Panelists also discussed the role of higher education in addressing workforce needs and advancing innovation.<\/p>\n<p>51ÁÔÆæ Chancellor Mark Mone highlighted in opening remarks the university\u2019s focus on partnerships and how they help encourage collaboration and open pathways to research and learning opportunities for students, faculty and staff. For instance, WE Energies is a sustaining member of one such partnership, <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/csi\/partners\/\">the Connected Systems Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The event ended with networking opportunities over lunch for attendees, which included students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is about looking toward the future, and in particular, energy and infrastructure issues,\u201d Mone said. \u201cWhat do we want our future to look like and how we get there \u2014 this is what today is about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event was also sponsored by the Taiwanese American Chamber of Commerce of
