{"id":114364,"date":"2022-11-15T13:42:32","date_gmt":"2022-11-15T19:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=114364"},"modified":"2024-09-27T09:56:15","modified_gmt":"2024-09-27T14:56:15","slug":"state-of-milwaukee-summit-focuses-on-pandemic-and-racial-equity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/state-of-milwaukee-summit-focuses-on-pandemic-and-racial-equity\/","title":{"rendered":"State of Milwaukee Summit focuses on pandemic and racial equity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MILWAUKEE_The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will host three events on Nov. 17 focused on the city of Milwaukee, highlighted by the annual State of Milwaukee Summit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/event\/urban-studies-programs-state-of-milwaukee-summit-covid-19-racial-equity-what-have-we-learned-and-where-do-we-go-from-here\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">This year\u2019s Milwaukee Summit<\/a>\u00a0is \u201cCOVID-19 and Racial Equity: What Have We Learned and Where Do We Go from Here?\u201d It begins at 7 p.m. in the Golda Meir Library fourth floor conference center.<\/p>\n<p>Panelists include Cavalier Johnson, mayor of Milwaukee; David Crowley, Milwaukee County executive; Joel Brennan, president of the Greater Milwaukee Committee; and Ellen M. Gilligan, president and CEO of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Opening remarks by 51ÁÔÆæ Chancellor Mark Mone will lead into a discussion of the impact of the pandemic on our neighborhoods and communities. Questions the panelists will address include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How has COVID-19 further revealed and magnified existing inequalities in our city and region?<\/li>\n<li>How have city and county government services been affected, and what role can the public sector play to restore or transform to meet the present challenges?<\/li>\n<li>How are businesses and community organizations faring and what does the future look like?<\/li>\n<li>What have we learned that can be applied in the way forward?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Before the Milwaukee Summit, historian John Gurda\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/event\/milwaukee-a-city-built-on-water-with-milwaukee-historian-john-gurda\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">will speak at 4 p.m.<\/a>\u00a0in Lapham N103 about his book and documentary \u201cMilwaukee: A City Built on Water.\u201d He will discuss the role of the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan in shaping the Milwaukee of today and tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>At 4:30 p.m. in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning first floor commons, City of Milwaukee Development Commissioner Lafayette Crump will present\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/sarup\/commissioner-lafayette-crump-2022\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cBuilding Up Milwaukee: Challenges, Opportunities, and a Path Forward.\u201c<\/a>\u00a0His conversation about the future of the city centers around Mayor Cavalier Johnson\u2019s vision of growing Milwaukee\u2019s population to 1 million people through enhanced economic activity and support for small businesses as well as the creation of new opportunities for residents, families and businesses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MILWAUKEE_The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will host three events on Nov. 17 focused on the city of Milwaukee, highlighted by the annual State of Milwaukee Summit.
