For Javier Retana Jr., the chance to meet and talk to the vice president of the United States was an honor and a chance to represent the Latino community.<\/p>\n

Retana, a 51ÁÔÆæ senior in civil engineering from Kenosha, is a first-generation university student. \u201cMy parents came here from small villages in Mexico, so they were excited that I had this opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Retana was one of the participants in a roundtable on Hispanic community concerns who visited with Vice President Kamala Harris during her trip to the 51ÁÔÆæ campus<\/a> Thursday, Sept. 22.<\/p>\n

The students in Gina Vlach\u2019s American Government class were somewhat surprised when the vice president stopped in to talk to them while on campus. However, having their class location moved, getting \u201cwanded\u201d before class and having two Secret Service agents sitting in had them asking questions about a potential distinguished visitor.<\/p>\n

Vlach joked about it: \u201cI told them, \u2018Do you think I have that kind of pull?\u2019\u201d However, when a \u201cwall of cameras\u201d suddenly appeared at the back of the room, the secret was out.<\/p>\n

Vlach is a graduate student in political science who leads the discussion session of the class taught by Kathleen Dolan, distinguished professor of political science. Vlach had been asked to keep the Harris visit secret until it actually happened.<\/p>\n

In the roundtable with Hispanic community organizations, Harris discussed and listened to representatives who discussed issues of concern to the community.<\/p>\n

Alberto Maldonado, director of 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s Roberto Hern\u00e1ndez Center, was impressed with the vice president\u2019s demeanor. \u201cShe was extremely responsive when I mentioned the work we are doing helping thousands of students from the community who aspire to excel and get ahead and are often the first ones in their family go to college.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was also impressed with her empathy for those students, often drawing on her own experience as the daughter of immigrants, Maldonado said. \u201cShe\u2019s very personable and connected well with Javier and me,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Maldonado was also touched by her concern for those in Puerto Rico affected by Hurricane Fiona. He has friends and family there, and his own hometown has been in the international news because of the devastation. \u201cI got a little emotional because it\u2019s about my neighborhood,\u201d Maldonado said of the discussion.<\/p>\n

Representing others<\/h3>\n

Retana, who leads 51ÁÔÆæ\u2019s chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, said he and his fellow students were especially interested in the administration\u2019s plans for student loan forgiveness. Both Retana and Maldonado said they felt the chance to speak to the vice president wasn\u2019t just about them, but an opportunity to represent the concerns of others. \u201cWherever we are, we carry the entire community on our shoulders,\u201d Maldonado said.<\/p>\n

In Vlach\u2019s class, the vice president talked about the climate crisis and the need for the students \u2013 most of them freshmen \u2013 to lead on environmental causes. Protecting the planet should be a nonpartisan issue, she told them.<\/p>\n

That was a message that resonated with Amber Myles, a first-year student in the American Government class who plans to become an environmental lawyer.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe just solidified what I already knew, the climate crisis will be an even bigger issue for our generation than it is now,\u201d Myles said. \u201cAnd we must make the right decisions so that we can continue to live here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Feeling encouraged<\/h3>\n

Myles said she was surprised by the class visitor and, though she didn\u2019t have any questions for her, \u201cI did tell her she was beautiful in person.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was also inspired by what the vice president represented.<\/p>\n

\u201cMeeting her was very important to me. I am the only black female in that class, so I felt encouraged to keep going along this path that I am on. Also being a retired naval veteran and being able to meet someone who is so important to our country right now was very big to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

There were cell phone photos aplenty in the brief classroom visit and student Averell Charlton Diesch got the vice president to sign a copy of the Constitution.<\/p>\n

Stirring interest in government<\/h3>\n

Charlton Diesch is a junior transfer student from the University of Hong Kong, majoring in economics. He\u2019s been considering a political science minor or maybe a second major because he\u2019s interested in public administration.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis (experience) will probably push me toward pursuing a second major,\u201d he said. \u201cI had her sign Article 1, Section 3, which she thought was a good choice given her actions as president of the Senate have been notable.\u201d (That section of the Constitution<\/a> refers to the composition and workings of the Senate.)<\/p>\n

Like Myles, he appreciated Harris\u2019 message about the environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile the presenter was remarkable, the message itself wasn\u2019t new, he said. \u00a0\u201cThe environment is important and ultimately younger generations bear the responsibility to work to fix it because while we didn\u2019t cause the problems, we have benefited from its exploitation and will have to pay the price if it isn’t done.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
