\u201cI need your leadership,\u201d she told the students. \u201cPart of what I\u2019m asking of you is to remind people that we need to act together as communities. And the other issue that I\u2019m going to ask you to lean into is reminding everyone about the climate crisis. You guys are going to pay the price for what we do or what we have.\u201d<\/p>\n
Harris said that protecting the planet should be a nonpartisan issue because it affects everyone.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs members of a democracy, we need to dispense with unnecessary conflict and partisanship,\u201d she said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter who you voted for last time. If we don\u2019t come together on this issue, we are all going to pay the price.\u201d<\/p>\n
She noted that investing in a clean energy economy makes sense because that will also create jobs.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s not accept false choices,\u201d she said. \u201cIt has to be about \u2018let\u2019s save this planet,\u2019 and I\u2019m going to count on you to get that message out.\u201d<\/p>\n
And she told the class of mostly freshmen that she was proud of them for embarking on a college journey.<\/p>\n
\u201cYour freshman year is so exciting. You\u2019re sitting next to people who you\u2019ll end up knowing your entire life, I\u2019m telling you,\u201d she said. \u201cSo enjoy this.
