  {"id":108657,"date":"2022-07-18T16:29:47","date_gmt":"2022-07-18T21:29:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=108657"},"modified":"2023-05-10T15:42:35","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T20:42:35","slug":"first-nadella-scholarship-winners-attracted-to-computer-science-through-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/first-nadella-scholarship-winners-attracted-to-computer-science-through-games\/","title":{"rendered":"First Nadella scholarship winners attracted to computer science through games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite its widespread use, leading facial recognition software is disproportionately inaccurate in identifying people with darker skin \u2013 particularly women \u2013 because the algorithms used in the software are largely \u201ctrained\u201d on men with light skin tones.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one reason that a career in computer science interests Amya Camberos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to be a part of a work field where I am able to improve algorithms to be more unbiased,\u201d she said. \u201cAlso, as a black woman, I want to use my perspective and experience to improve the diversity of the field. The industry may be growing, but the diversity of minorities is still low.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_108660\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108660\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-108660\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2022\/07\/nadella250x300Amya-Camberos-Profile.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-108660\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amya Camberos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Camberos, who attended the Milwaukee High School of the Arts, is one of the first nine recent high school graduates to be awarded full-ride scholarships to study computer science, data science or information technology at 51ÁÔÆæ. The scholarships are funded through a gift from 51ÁÔÆæ alumnus and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and his wife, Anu Nadella.<\/p>\n<p>The Nadellas\u2019 $2 million gift supports the Fund for Diversity in Tech Education at 51ÁÔÆæ, which helps the university attract, retain and graduate undergraduate students from marginalized communities, preparing them with the skills to pursue high-tech careers.<\/p>\n<p>Several of the scholarship awardees said curiosity about how computer and video games worked sparked their interest in data science as a profession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy interest in computer science came from growing up loving computers and always wondering how they operate,\u201d said Robert Jones, who just graduated from Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy. \u201cI wanted to know how all of them were made. I also always wanted to create my own games.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_108661\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108661\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-108661\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2022\/07\/nadella250x300jones.thumbnail_IMG_5286.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-108661\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Robert Jones<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The same was true for Ignacio Vega Rivera, a graduate of Ronald Reagan High School, who said playing a game called Pokemon Emerald as a youngster captured his imagination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought, \u2018there\u2019s something in this Gameboy Advanced, telling it what to do to make this stuff appear and make these sounds play,\u201d Vega Rivera remembered. \u201cI found that amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In high school, he took an engineering class that introduced him to Scratch, a program used to code games, which cinched his career plans. He said he is interested primarily in studying either robotics or computer programming languages and their applications.<\/p>\n<p>Camberos also had exposure to both computer science and engineering coursework in high school that introduced her to the basics of algorithms, data structure and programming language. She is considering careers in either ethical hacking or robotics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought about these two career paths not only because they\u2019re fascinating, but I hope to do work that will help others in some way,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The students said that having the financial support means they won\u2019t have to work while studying in rigorous degree programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like I would have gone to college no matter what because I have a mindset of doing more to get more in my life,\u201d Jones said. \u201cBut the scholarship just took a lot of stress off my shoulders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/undergrad-admission\/scholarships-aid\/diversity-tech-education\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anu and Satya Nadella Scholarships<\/a> are specifically for students who graduate from Milwaukee high schools, provide financial and academic support, and cover tuition, fees, room and board for 12 to 15 students for up to five years.<\/p>\n<p>Each recipient will be assigned a dedicated success coach, an academic advisor and a peer mentor, and will be provided additional tutoring and support opportunities to lead to successful student outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarships are part of a larger initiative supported by the Nadellas\u2019 gift that includes support for pre-college programming and emergency grants to
