Suppes as the 2022-23 Water Policy Scholar. Suppes is an associate professor in public health and environmental studies at UW-Eau Claire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a Water Policy Scholar, Suppes will develop a model to assess human illness risk from ingesting per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are persistent, harmful contaminants present in Wisconsin groundwater, a source of drinking water. Her work will focus on Eau Claire residents.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_108516\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108516\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-108516\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2022\/06\/Laura-Suppes250x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-108516\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Laura Suppes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Suppes\u2019 yearlong project can help inform public health policymaking around this emerging contaminant. Water quality safety and emerging contaminants is one of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/freshwater.wisconsin.edu\/\">Freshwater Collaborative of Wisconsin\u2019s<\/a>\u00a010 grand challenges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Environmental Protection Agency has advised that at least two of the four synthetic pollutants known as \u201cforever chemicals\u201d can affect health even at levels close to zero.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eau Claire has more than 68,000 residents who rely on groundwater as the source of municipal drinking water. PFAS were discovered in four of Eau Claire\u2019s 16 municipal water wells during summer of 2021. Although Eau Claire\u2019s water utility has stopped using the contaminated wells, residents consuming municipal drinking water prior to 2021 were exposed to PFAS.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exposure data unique to the Eau Claire community \u2013 such as the average amount of water people ingested \u2013 will be collected and analyzed. Results will be shared with the Eau Claire City-County Health Department for use in public health messaging about PFAS exposure and illness risk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The developed risk assessment model will be accessible to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/centerforwaterpolicy\/uw-water-policy-network\/\">UW Water Policy Network<\/a>\u00a0for use and dissemination. In the model, exposure inputs can be customized to assess illness probabilities in other areas of Wisconsin where PFAS have been found.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/centerforwaterpolicy\/current-policy-scholars\/\">Water Policy Scholars<\/a>\u00a0program\u00a0brings policy researchers across the UW System together with freshwater scientists to frame policy questions and adapt tools to\u00a0address\u00a0water resource issues. The program is intended to increase the Center for Water Policy\u2019s capacity to develop sustainable solutions to freshwater problems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Suppes received her master\u2019s degree in public health administration and policy from the University of Minnesota and her PhD in environmental health sciences from the University of Arizona.
