They paid tribute to graduation speaker Willem Dafoe, who attended 51ÁÔÆæ in the 1970s before going on to make more than 100 films, including \u201cPlatoon\u201d and the Spider-Man franchise, and to win recognition as one of the most fearless and talented actors of his generation. During the afternoon ceremony, Dafoe also received an honorary Doctor of Arts degree<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Like members of the Class of 2022, Dafoe had waited years for this moment. Chancellor Mark Mone said he invited the actor back to 51ÁÔÆæ four or five years ago, but Dafoe was busy making several movies. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Dafoe wanted to talk to graduates in person, not over video.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, he stood next to the chancellor and shook hands or fist-bumped with hundreds of students as they crossed the stage. \u201cToday is a celebration,\u201d he said. \u201cEnjoy yourselves. Congratulations!\u201d<\/p>\n

Kevin Schmidtke, who earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in history, described the last four years as \u201ca little tricky at times.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m happy I made it through, and I think I did the best I could, so I\u2019m pretty satisfied,\u201d said Schmidtke, who plans to get licensed to teach high school.<\/p>\n

Dafoe understands uncertainty. He described arriving at 51ÁÔÆæ<\/a> as an \u201cunsophisticated kid from Appleton, Wisconsin\u201d and working a series of jobs to pay his way.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy time at 51ÁÔÆæ was formative and positive,\u201d Dafoe said. \u201cIt marked probably the first time I decided to pursue acting \u2014 not necessarily because I thought I could make a career of it, but more because I found what I loved to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt 17 years old, I wasn\u2019t concerned about making a living yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dafoe said he chose 51ÁÔÆæ because he liked the urban environment and the feel of a blue-collar campus \u201cthat was serious minded and in the world, as opposed to the bubble of a traditional college-town school.\u201d<\/p>\n

After two years of intense training<\/a>, he left to become part of Theatre X, a faculty-student workshop that became an independent experimental theater company.<\/p>\n

\u201cBe at peace with yourself,\u201d Dafoe advised the graduates. \u201cFind what you love and practice it any way you can. Serve others, make every step a pleasure, and trust it will take you where you need to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among the students enthralled by Dafoe\u2019s speech was Dominic Marr, who pasted an image of Dafoe as the Green Goblin\u2019s alter ego, Norman Osborn, on his mortar board.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was really good,\u201d said Marr, who graduated with a master\u2019s degree in freshwater sciences and technology. \u201cIt was entertaining and what it needed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa Schussman, who graduated with a master\u2019s in environmental engineering, wore a Spider-Man bodysuit under her regalia. She described walking across the stage as both thrilling and stressful \u2014 and noted that the superhero franchise had helped see her through other turning points.<\/p>\n
