When I caught up with Julien Phifer<\/strong> this past week, he was still reflecting on what it meant to win the Rising Star Award<\/strong> at the 6th Annual African American Environmental Pioneer Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It feels great to be recognized!”<\/em> he told me. “I haven\u2019t been in this field for long, so winning an award like this\u2014it\u2019s validating. It reminds me that everything I do comes back to the same goal: making the environment cleaner and our communities healthier. I don\u2019t do this work for recognition, but it does feel good to know my efforts don\u2019t go unnoticed.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Julien has served as the\u00a0Regional Engagement Coordinator for Milwaukee County Parks<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0since 2024, following his\u00a0Master\u2019s in Sustainable Peacebuilding\u00a0<\/strong>program\u00a0from UW-Milwaukee<\/a>. But his journey into environmental work started long before college. He recalls spending long days at his neighborhood park, just minutes from home. Now, as an adult, he\u2019s working to ensure more Milwaukee residents have access to and appreciation for their natural surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His path into environmental work is deeply tied to his experience as an entrepreneur. He\u2019s not just managing Milwaukee\u2019s parks\u2014he\u2019s reimagining how people engage with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Startup Challenge directly  taught me to think outside the box. There isn\u2019t one perfect solution to a problem. If something doesn\u2019t work, you pivot. You experiment. That mindset has been huge in my role at the parks.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the biggest challenges? Getting people together.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Everyone I work with\u2014residents, volunteers, community groups\u2014has a different schedule. Some work nine-to-five, others do third shift. It\u2019s tough to get the right people in the room at the same time, but that\u2019s where collaboration comes in. When groups share ideas, we can actually make things happen.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Julien is determined to bring the right voices into the conversation because the best solutions are those shaped by the communities they serve. Another challenge? There\u2019s no single issue to solve when it comes to getting people out into the parks. That\u2019s why he\u2019s always thinking about partnerships and new ways to support the parks\u2019 mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You know, something like algae buildup is a big problem\u2014it\u2019s expensive to fix. But I started thinking back to a group I met through I-Corps at 51ÁÔÆæ. They were tackling the same issue from a different angle. I thought, \u2018What if they could be part of the solution here?\u2019 That\u2019s where the entrepreneurial mindset kicks in. You connect people, explore different solutions, and see what sticks.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the challenges, his favorite part of the job is selling Milwaukee to Milwaukee.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“People don\u2019t realize what we have here\u2014freshwater lakes, green spaces, parks within a 10-minute walk of most homes. In other cities, access to nature is a luxury. Here, it\u2019s everywhere. I love helping people see that.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before we wrapped up, I asked what advice he\u2019d give to someone who wants to make an impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Hate to be clich\u00e9, but just do it\u2014like Nike,”<\/em> he said with a grin. “If you have an idea, don\u2019t keep it to yourself. Talk about it. Find people who can help. The more you put it out there, the more it\u2019ll come together.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if Julien\u2019s work is any proof, putting ideas into action is how real change happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
