Students who demonstrate a capacity for doctoral work and wish to earn a PhD at 51ÁÔÆæ are advised to proceed as rapidly as possible to doctoral status. The director of graduate studies serves as an initial advisor. It is recommended that the student have a permanent advisor by the end of the second semester of enrollment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-final-project\">Final Project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A research paper or other project appropriate to the student\u2019s professional goals, to be defended in an individualized oral examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Final project. The project is a research paper on a topic chosen in consultation with the student\u2019s advisor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oral examination. The oral examination, usually lasting an hour and a half, focuses on the final project but also covers other elements of the student\u2019s program of study.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-regulations-concerning-final-projects-and-oral-examinations\">Regulations Concerning Final Projects and Oral Examinations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students should consult with their advisors before completing 24 credits in order to determine a final project. Ordinarily, this is a revised and expanded course or seminar paper of at least 30 pages. The project should demonstrate the student\u2019s skills in research, analysis and argumentation. The project serves both as a concluding effort at the master\u2019s level and as an indication of the student\u2019s potential for doctoral study.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In consultation with the student, the Director of Graduate Studies appoints an MA Examining Committee. At least two of the three members must be Linguistics Department faculty members. The MA Examining Committee administers the final Oral Examination.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The project must be submitted and the oral examination completed within one year after the completion of 24 credits. Students should remember that a maximum of 30 credits at the master\u2019s level is applicable to the PhD 54 credit requirement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students who express intent to go on for the PhD are evaluated by the MA Examining Committee regarding their qualifications for further graduate study at the doctoral level. The Committee Chair puts the Committee\u2019s recommendation in writing and places it in the student\u2019s academic file.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students who fail the oral examination may be required to revise their final project, retake the examination, or both. The oral examination may be retaken only once. Students must register for 1-3 credits when revising the final project after a failed examination; however, the additional credit(s) may not count toward the 30 credits required for the degree.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-time-limit\">Time Limit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The student must complete all degree requirements within five years of initial enrollment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-good-standing-in-the-linguistics-graduate-program\">Good Standing in the Linguistics Graduate Program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students in the Linguistics graduate program are expected to demonstrate satisfactory academic progress, which includes the capacity to conduct quality original research in the field of linguistics, as judged by the department faculty. Students who are not in good standing may be terminated from the program. If a student has any of the following issues, they are not in good standing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Any student found guilty of academic misconduct.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any two grades of B or below.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No faculty advisor. Incoming students are automatically assigned a faculty member who will serve as their default advisor during their first two semesters in the program. By the end of their third semester, students must formalize a relationship with a faculty member who agrees to serve as their advisor going forward.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A majority vote of the Linguistics Faculty that you have engaged in unethical or extremely unprofessional behavior.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Failure to meet research obligations as determined by a majority of the Linguistics faculty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Policies of the 51ÁÔÆæ Graduate School also apply.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-graduate-grievance-procedures\">Graduate Grievance Procedures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Federal law and 51ÁÔÆæ policy require programs and departments to have procedures for graduate students to appeal academic decisions such as grades or scholastic standing. These procedures ensure the protection of students\u2019 rights.
